If you're camera has a "red eye reduction" option for the flash, it will fire a flash a second or two before the actual picture is taken.. this will cause the subjects pupils to contract, thus reducing the possibility of red-eye. It's not guaranteed, but can often reduce or eliminate the effect in pictures. It makes me smile too. I was worried that the pictures she took wouldn't come out because she didn't know to use the flash. It was one of those el cheapo cameras that you have to press the flash everytime, instead of holding it down for a few seconds and the flash staying on for a while.
