Hi folks. So I was at work Friday, helping my boss dig through her mail, and I saw a little package with a bright-yellow CD slipcase inside. Plucked it out... and I hid the CD immediately in the hopes that she didn't see. She did. So I had to give her the copy of Room Noises that was in my hand, though I immediately made her play it. Of course, now I'm on about listen number 30. At first, I thought I had it on repeat just to get a sense of the album, but then I realized I had it on repeat because I'm in middle school again and love the hell out of this thing. I've been such a sucker for Eisley's harmonizing, and every track is thick with it here. Technical info: Four songs re-recorded from the EPs (well, three were re-recorded and "Marvelous Things" was just mixed again -- that's how it sounds to me but lord knows how wrong I could be), and "Memories" in particular sounds much better. "Telescope Eyes" sounds like it's being prepped for radio and "I Wasn't Prepared" keeps its same formula with a bit more beef. 12 tracks total at ~41 minutes. Just so you know, it's not overproduced fluff, thank god. That's both good and bad, though, because I don't think anybody who wasn't into Eisley in the first place will be converted - still the same stuff, only refined and a bit smarter-sounding. Too bad "Treetops" didn't make the album, but I suppose 8 new songs that are this polished are more than a decent consolation. The contrasted vocals of "Golly Sandra" are gorgeous, and after a goofy intro, "Plenty of Paper" reveals itself as this amazingly ready-for-radio ditty. Seriously, this album is just one cameo on The O.C. away from overrunning America's middle and high schools. Interesting thing to note, though -- WB Records put a very, very blatant piracy warning on this disc that we hadn't seen before. Lots of yellow warning exclamation-point signs and indications that all kinds of legal hullabulloo would destroy our souls if the CD is given to a third-party. Shame, because I'd really like to burn copies of this CD for people to get the word out, but I'm not gonna test WB's claim that it's watermarked with an imprint that links the audio back to the original owner. Then again, I'm starting to wonder if they put all those labels on the disc as a way to hype the album, actually, only cuz I really haven't seen this kinda protection before. Some editor in New York sees it and says, "never heard of these guys, but they MUST be important with all this stuff." Who knows. At any rate, here's to hoping that WB sticks with a February release date. Would hate to see an album this good lost in major-label-limbo like the Toadies a few years back. I thought at the very least Eisley fans would want to know about the album for the time being, and if you're curious about any other songs, ask away. Take care -Sam |

I honestly refuse to read this. I just don't want to know the track listing yet. Its not time. I'm so excited waiting to know what's going to be on it, how different songs will be and so on. Just not gonna do it.. _________________ "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed." Just not gonna do it.. Luckily there's no tracklisting. In fact, the only five tracks mentioned by name and in detail in that review are ones that have already been released in some form or another... "Telescope Eyes," "Marvelous Things," and "Memories" in EP form, and "Plenty of Paper" and "Golly Sandra" at the concerts. There's absolutely no hint of a track order or any deep info about other tracks. Forgive me for being a skeptic, but I have to doubt the validity of this review, and I will until I see proof. No offense to you, Sam--you wrote a great review. I've just seen too many "This is the real track order!" and "I got an advance copy of Room Noises!" on this forum to really beleive a review that, technically, anyone could have written. If you had a photo of the CD with mailer, or (better yet) if Boyd confirmed that advance copies had been sent, I'd be more inclined to believe you. Like I said, nothing personal--just me guarding against disappointment. _________________ INTELLECT AND ROMANCE OVER BRUTE FORCE AND CYNICISM Smokemonster |

Here is a bit of info on Sam. It appears that he works for the Dallas Observer, and the Houston Press so I have little doubt regarding the authenticity. Here's something he wrote if your looking for proof. http://www.dallasobserver.com/issues/2004-11-25/music/hearthere2.html http://www.houstonpress.com/issues/2004-04-29/music/rotation2.html I love the last line from Sams review of Modest Mouse's latest. "Good News for People Who Love iTunes." According to other articles he has spent time with Midlake. So why would he be trying to pull our leg? I'm jealous, but I won't throw useless words around criticizing the authenticity of the review. Saellys, do some research before writing next time. _________________ I am not who I say I am! |

to assuage any fears, ops can check the IP of this post, since I'm posting at work. it'll show up as "newtimes.com", our parent company. I'll go ahead and list 'spoilers' here, but for the sake of those who don't want to know, the text will be invisible until you highlight it. here goes: tracklisting in disgusting detail: 1. 01 - Memories (3:29) 2. 02 - Telescope Eyes (3:05) 3. 03 - I Wasn't Prepared (3:24) 4. 04 - Golly Sandra (3:30) 5. 05 - Marvelous Things (3:32) 6. 06 - Brightly Wound (3:39) 7. 07 - Lost At Sea (3:40) 8. 08 - My Lovely (3:27) 9. 09 - Just Like We Do (3:10) 10. 10 - Plenty Of Paper (3:22) 11. 11 - One Day I Slowly Floated Away (3:37) 12. 12 - Trollywood (3:22) I think it's a little funny that every song is right around 3:30. I was kinda hoping there'd be some 5-8 minute epic song on here, actually. To answer KSpice, "Just Like We Do" is quite pretty, although its acoustic sound bears an odd, though SMALL, resemblance to that Filter song "Take A Picture." I think I'm the only one who hears it, but yeah. I need more time before I can give any sort of definitive opinion about Room Sounds as a whole, though the more I listen, the less I feel like there are any flat-out "hits" on the album - the kind of stuff that would blow up huge on MTV. That's a good thing to me, by the way, and it's not an album full of filler, either. That said, the four EP songs are so old to me that I no longer have the excitement over them I once had, so if those blow up on radio, I wouldn't be too surprised. Oh, and "Brightly Wound" has incredibly great sounds. I know I've said that already, but it's really, really pretty. Great hooky chorus, amazing instrumental sounds. The kind of song that I can listen to on repeat and have my mind wander through 308038403 thoughts and write a pretty song of my own in response (which I did last night). If I ran a radio station, I'd start playing that one right away. I wouldn't call it a 'hit' because it's better than that. Did I mention I like that song? ha. I'm redundant. Take care -Sam |
