Good interview. And it seems Weston jumped in there more than normal. New record sounds great! Thanks.

That's one of the better interviews.

I saw the interviewer dude hanging around while I was in line for the signing.

The more I read about the new album, the more amped I get. April seems so far away.

That was cool.
It was nice looking at pictures of The Flaming Lips, Sufjan, and Mr. Kweller while reading.

^Yeah it was! I thought that Ben's bloody nose/tampon stoppage was funny.

I noticed they mentioned they don't know how they'll play the new songs live (considering the diverse instruments used in the studio), hopefully they can figure it out.

I wonder if they were used a Balinese gamelan or a regular one.

I always thought Gamelan was the type of music/orchestra name, and each instrument had its own name. I recently did a 6 week integration where I put on a gamelan puppet show and I was part of the orchestra, and all the instruments had their own names.

Nice interview!

However, where in the last record did they use strings, I missed that? (besides Laughing City, which was prior to that...)

They "tried" strings on Room Noises and I'm sure someone...wb...thought it wasn't right or maybe it was on a song we never heard (Hit Singles (then again I don't think this song made it to the recording phase)).

Yes, but there are two distinct styles of gamelan. Balinese (from Bali), and then the rest of the country has a different style, I can't remember the name.

Towns in Bali own gamelan ensembles. The richer the town, the better the ensemble. I think they even have like island wide contests to see who has the best gamelan. Balinese gamelan has a much harser and active sound, with lots of interlocking rhythms. They use gongs in pairs, tuned slightly off, so they create a shimmering vibrato effect. There are keyed idiophones and pot gongs as well. I can't remember much more from class.

Makes sense, I was in an Javanese Indonesian orchestra, I don't think it was Bali

But I still don't understand the calling instruments gamelan, because I'm almost 100% positive "gamelan" isn't a singular instrument. I thought the band was using just various forms of saron and gender.

Gamelan refers to the whole set of instruments. Like a drum kit.
