I just found this, it doesn't seem like it was the plot of the song, but I wonder how the song was inspired by it: From Amazon: Grade 5 Up-- A retelling of one of Andersen's more obscure tales. An Egyptian princess falls into the evil clutches of the Marsh King. A child is born to her and is taken to be raised by a Viking woman. Beautiful but with a horrid disposition, the child Helga is transformed into a gentle frog at night. When this child becomes a young woman, she meets a slave who preaches mercy and compassion. Changed by this encounter, she finds her true mother and travels with her back to Egypt. The story ends on a haunting note when Helga unknowingly speeds through time, discovers herself in the future, and majestically changes into a swan. Although not possessing the music of some Andersen retellings (notably those of Eva Le Gallienne), Gentry's version is nevertheless very competent. But no matter how competent the prose, the story remains an oddity. Its heavy symbolism and often disjointed plot limits its audience. Visually, the book is attractive, utilizing a smaller format than most picture books and including borders on each page of text. Even the typeface and page design are appealing. With their palette of deep greens, blues, and grays, the ink wash illustrations reflect the somber quality of the story. Done in a fairly realistic style, the illustrations remain accomplished but distant. Despite all its good intentions, the story is hardly vintage Andersen, and somehow the book never fully gels. This is not likely to have wide appeal with children. --Denise A. Anton, Library Book Selection Service, Inc., Bloomington, Ill. I read the HCA version a few months ago after I saw this title as a track listing. It's an interesting story. It took me a while to get into the story; When I was younger I read some of his works and it seemed easier for some reason. Eitherway, once you get into it, its an intriguing story. I guess we will know eventually, but I'm going to guess its LOOSELY based off of the story. |
