Or "Room Noises Combinations game" ... heh. As Combinations approaches, the topic of Room Noises continues to come up. It seems pretty widely accepted in Eisleyland that the album was not quite what it could have been. I concur. While I think the album is terribly underrated, I don't think production was the sole weakness of the album. The one thing that truly has thrown me off over time is how the album kind of starts off with a torrent of songs from the EPs, some of which were included at the prodding of outside forces who wanted sure things (I think, if I remember correctly). I have always enjoyed the latter half of the album best. After thinking about the 10-song length of Combinations, I realized how much Room Noises would have been helped by trimming a couple of repeats. Then I realized that they have properly released three wonderful cast offs (Surrouned, Escaping Song and Vintage People), and a fourth (Sun Feet) is on its way one day, many hope. So I fired up iTunes, made a playlist and (with a hopefully temproary fill in for Sun Feet), compiled this easily obtainable album: 1) Memories (a repeat, but a strong intro, regardless) 2) Sun Feet (TK, future b-side?) 3) Escaping Song (iTunes Final Noise) 4) Golly Sandra 5) Brightly Wound 6) Vintage People (iTunes B-side for Telescope Eyes) ----- 7) They All Surrounded Me (iTunes Final Noise) 8 ) My Lovely 9) Just Like We Do 10) Plenty of Paper 11) One Day I Slowly Floated Away 12) Trolley Wood I left the last five untouched, basically because I can listen to that part of the album repeatedly as is. I mainly dropped most of the repeats from the EPs, and subbed in the B-sides. I like this because, once Sun Feet sees a proper release, these are all cuts from the Room Noises sessions, and are all available to fans to purchase legally. The production issues still exist, but I feel that the song selection is a little more authentic (since it bypasses a little meddling). I would have loved to have included Lost at Sea, but I think the demo was 1) a demo and 2) too much of one speed, and I think the RN version was the same, just it was stuck going too fast. Sometimes you wind up with a great song that just doesn't work in time and gets left out. So that's Lost at Sea for this version ... Anyway, this is mostly just something fun I thought I'd do since we've talked about this so much. Lady of the Wood should be added on that list, like, as number 13, or, move the other ones and place it somewhere in there, cause that's a worthy song to be put onto an album... and i do agree that it's underrated, i loved most of this album, actually, pretty much all of it, so what if they're "too polished", it can't be changed, well, it could, maybe, but so what, it's already been released, and it's not like they didn't sound good, they did, imo... _________________ cynlovescandy wrote: kulvir wrote: I bet R. I left off Lady of the Wood mainly because there's not a studio cut for people to use. I do hope there is one day, though. I really like both versions of it. I agree. A good song is a good song when it's recorded poorly and you can barely hear, so it's still a good song even if it's been cleaned up a bit "too much." was good ol' Mr Pine recorded during the Room Noises sessions? i know Sun Feet was recording during some EP sessions, too - Laughing City at least if memory serves correct (because i think i remember Boyd mentioning a Mike Mogis string arrangement on the tune). _________________ I am Torgo. I left it off because it doesn't really fit the rest of the album as well (very loud, very dark), but mainly because they recorded it (the single version) after they had been touring for the album. Hmmm, I will have to think about this one a lot. I can't imagine what the band (any band) goes through with their tracklistings...It takes me forever to think of a tracklisting for my own personal car-travel complilations or even just for fun like this!

I have always enjoyed the latter half of the album best. That's funny. For me its the first half that got me, and it took me a long while to warm up to the second half of the album. Then again, I first heard the "Head Against the Sky" EP, then "Room Noises," then those free EPs from Orange Gold and Green before anything else. So to me, the LC and MT EPs were the repeat tracks! 
So in essence, I still like Room Noises as is and don't get the "too produced" (well do get it, but don't find it a major problem) or "sameness" that is often brought up. Then again, I guess that's evidence that its all about perspectives.

Oh, it's definitely about perspective.
