I know who he is because I read Rolling Stone magazine, but I'm not very familiar with his life.

I don't think so... I guess it really depends on the crowd you hang out with, though... or area of where you live. Most people don't know who he is unless you get into the right crowd.

Oh yeah, I know who he is 'cause I have a friend (male) who is seriously obsessed with him and Johnny Depp... aka, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He made me watch the movie one night when he slept over, very bizarre.

It depends if you can abide by a writing style which is primarily comprised of antics.

I'm not so very keen on Gilliam's Fear And Loathing though... which is peculiar, because he's such a distinctive director and I love his other films.

I think it was a mistake to make the hallucinations quite so literal. The scene in the book in which Hunter enters the hotel lobby and sees all the Americans as slobbering ghastly reptiles, is really effective. When in the film these are actually rendered as actual dinosaur things, something is lost.

However I must stress... Brazil is incredible.

Check out Where The Buffalo Roam for a different take on Hunter S Thompson. Bill Murray plays him as kind of a bumbling drunk.
