Until Internet speeds raise dramatically, I don't think it's going to overtake a hard copy of the data. The quality and size of a BlueRay DVD would be far too large to quickly download on the average Internet connection. But when things speed up, I can see that coming ...

I have only see/used BlueRay. But I have to say it's absolutely great. My brothers remain convinced that it is the best format of the two.

I have seen both but I can't really see a difference in quality. I just wish one would be the clear winner so I can finally buy one without worrying that I am buying the new LaserDisc.

Divx can do 1080p on a standard DVD.
I was going to get a PS3 to try blu-ray.

There're multiple things going on for both formats; but, if history is any indication, Sony will end up losing again.

Blu-Ray has the higher capacity disc, which could mean less compression if someone were to increase the rate movies could be filmed and audio can be recorded (8 point surround sound is already plausible, just not implamented). However, Sony shot themselves in the foot when they (once again) decided that the porn industry couldn't directly buy their format. Analysts see that decision as being the main thing that killed Betatape, as the porn industry sells more movies than Hollywood does on a monthly basis.

HD-DVD has the U-control feature exclusive to it, which means better special content for the people who like special features with their movies. It also has the less expensive players at the moment. Granted, it may not have as much room for expansion; but it still has enough going for it in it's current state that I could see America as a whole being happy with it.

As far as downloading movies goes. Like Jamie said, not until internet speeds up dramatically. Too many people want more than just the movie itself, which is why almost every new movie releases collectors editions. You'd almost have to download a .exe or a flash file to be able to recreate that experience on the PC... from what I've seen.

Blu Ray has more capacity right now, though HD DVD apparently has a triple-layer disc in the works that is a little bigger than a dual-layer Blu Ray disc (though, would a triple-layer disc slow down disc play any? HD DVD loads slowly enough as it is. And, what about when a triple-layer Blu Ray disc is released that blows it away?) Blu Ray still uses MPEG2 compression for some reason, although they will be MPEG4 eventually. When that happens, Blu Ray will look even better than it does now, and many people say at the moment Blu Ray and HD DVD are comparable.

And, Sony didn't shut down porn. Porn is being released on Blu Ray. There are Disney-owned Blu Ray replication plants that will not produce porn discs, but that has nothing to do with Sony. Porn didn't kill Betamax, the fact that Betamax was proprietary (only Sony made Beta VCRs) killed it. Blu Ray is not proprietary.

The fact is, both Blu Ray and HD DVD use the same media, a 120mm optical disc. The future, I hope, is in dual format players, since both formats have their interesting features. That would give filmmakers and studios a lot more flexibility in creating home video content and the consumer would ultimately win out, so of course Sony and DVD Forum hate it. But LG created a precedent that will no doubt continue. A format war is just stupid in this case.

Reminds me of 8-track vs. cassette; VHS vs. Beta. Hopefully the dual player will be the future.

I hope dual players take off, too.

Blockbuster just announced that they were only carrying Blu-Ray DVDs I believe.

I personally think Blu-Ray will end up being the standard (unless something better comes along) due in part to the PS3 market penetration. But, let's not forgot that Blu-Ray was developed by quite a few different companies.
