And the official website for the movie does state that daemons are always the opposite sex of their human counterparts. I've seen two different versions of the trailer that mentions what they are, and one says "animal manifestation of their soul" while the other is "animal spirit guide," which just sounds ridiculous if you ask me. After the first page I couldn't read this anymore, I don't want to hear anymore about how evil these books are, it makes me sad inside. I'm sorry if i'm repeating what people said when I am defending the books now. People say it must be bad because it's called "His dark materials" -Um...Maybe if you read the introduction to "The Golden Compass" You'd have seen that it is named after a line in John Milton's "Paradise Lost" It's about killing god! SPOILER -Ok, the 3rd one they kill an angel who SAYS he's god, the twist was that Dust was really god. The church is bad in the books! -This is showing that sometimes things you trust can be manipulative and deseitful. The main character is Eve! -It's about how she is supposed to resist temptation to make the right choice. People's souls are demons! -Just no. They are Dæmons not demons. They are a person's soul in the form of an animal that personifies their personality. They are SOULS not demons... Just because Philip Pullman is an atheist doesn't mean he's trying to trick people into not believing in god. It is a work of fiction. Ok now that i'm done ranting for the moment I have to say I am SO excited to see the movie tomorrow! I made a shirt that says "I ♥ my dæmon" !!!
PS- Also about dæmons, don't take quizzes to find out what yours is, They are totally wrong. Try this website [url]daemons.envy.nu [/url] it's super helpful. And dæmons can definetly be the same sex, it's jsut more common to see opposite sex dæmons. Thick accents aren't going to cause intolerance. If you want to say it propagates stereotypes, you can certainly make that argument. I don't think any of the stereotypes were really offensive or harmful, but there's certainly a case to be made. But to talk about tolerance? No kid is going to think less of Indians because of this episode. Moreover, in the course of watching it, they will probably see pro-multiculturalist messages during the breaks (in addition to more stuff about the ever-growing High School Musical empire). An observation: TV shows are filled with caricatures; average, totally-realistic people and scenarios are boring. Extreme representations illustrate ideas more clearly in art. If this means we end up with stereotypes on TV, who cares? There's not really a need for the prince to be a complex and fully realized character. Don't think stereotype; think archetype. |

I think discrimination can be summed up in a brief story: So my Jewish friend goes to his class one day and the topic of discrimination comes up. At one point a black girl says something along the lines of "well, Jewish people don't know what its like to be black. They've never been oppressed or to be enslaved or anything." Completely ignore 4000 years of slavery, exile and genocide? Surely you jest madam? But no...she doesn't. And neither does anyone else when they open their mouths about things they don't understand. No one knows anything about anyone else's oppressions or discrimination or who hates who in the what now. Including all of us, even if you think you know (maybe you read a book) you're a liar. So stop. Don't call anyone oppressed or discriminated (yourself included) just...stop...because you're wrong even if you're right. |
