In addition to raw files from cameras, raw data from film scanners can also be referred to as digital negatives. Enormous uncompressed image files (usually taken with a more expensive camera) that give you greater freedom for editing the photo later. When I first heard about RAW, it was on dooce.com, and she was talking about being able to wallpaper one side of her living room with her nephew's face if she wanted--the files were that high quality. For music people, I compare JPG (standard) compression to MP3. Whereas, RAW is like a CD quality song. Except the difference is even more pronounced. No generalized set of colors retained ... every last bit of color that hits the sensor is on that RAW file. I agree on the B&W class. Everyone needs to take it. I dislike that it's being phased out as a requirement in photography programs. I'm glad I'm taking pictures tonight. I'm against being anti-digital, though I definitely think film should always have a place. I did avoid shooting film for most of five years, though. ha ha. But I'm over that now. Oh, to be on topic: Have I mentioned that I think Sherri's photography is getting really good? I think she's always had an eye for it. I don't know why, but this one makes me think of The Wizard of Oz. Probably a stretch, but I like it all the same. EDIT: After heading over to the flicker, I see Sherri references The Wizard of Oz about a photo similar also showing the ominous sky!

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2394/2103077844_41c404de53.jpg This one is super intense. The simple light and darks are enough to make it good. It's one of those pictures that would look good in black and white which is something many color photos would not do well in. _________________
