Food is readily available for the asking in most metropolitan areas, even in many rural areas. You just show up, say you're hungry, and they feed you. My church gathers donations for some food bank at least once a month, as do many of the other churches around here. This "moral" question exists in other areas of the world, but not in America. And as far as stealing to feed your kids, ever heard of food stamps? Free lunch (and in some areas breakfast) at the public schools for the poor children as well. There really is no need to steal in America to eat.

That's totally true. I would definitely do this, but I think if I was as starving as I'd imagine I'd have to be to steal, and I just needed something at that very moment, I'd steal. Heck, I may even ask if I could just... take... something. Maybe they'd feel bad for me, and give me a sandwich.

I'd like to think I'm principled, but I think if I got to that point of desperation, I would do it. Only as much as I needed, and not from individuals. I would feel much less dirty stealing from a corporation.

As far as I know, I would be able to get food from my church (people pay fast offerings once a month which allow for people in the ward in great need to be taken care of) or my family. The only scenario I can think of where I would steal food is if for some reason I was dumped into a foreign country where I didn't speak the language and had no resources. I'm diabetic and if I don't eat, I tip over.

Yep. If it was necessary to steal to SURVIVE, then yeah, I would definitely steal some food... esp. if I had kids.

this brings up another question: what if you're too proud to beg for money or food? and you would rather deal with the situation by yourself than to let everyone you know how badly you're doing.

how many people do you know who would hire a hobo?

having a job doesn't always mean you can afford to feed your family.

i thought we were talking about feeding yourself.

aforementioned shelters help people not look like hobos. so assuming you could find a shelter, get a shower and a shave and a decent set of clothes, there are lots of places that will hire people right off the street. grocery stores, 7-11s (ironic?), etc. i pass a place every day on my way to work that hires day laborers. as long as you're not too proud to do manual labor, i'd say there's really no need for stealing food to survive.
