I think I have always buttoned then zipped. I think it's less wear on the zipper or something? Not that it matters, because even new pants are so tattered or thin now ...

Man, button then zip. I used to go the other way around until I started wearing high-waisted pants and shorts from the '70s, which are all about tight-tight-tight hard-to-zippiness!
In fact...
I have a pair of shorts that unzips itself. Laughing

I use to zip and the button, but then everyone told me you're supposed to button and then zip, so that's what I do now.

If you button and then zip, the path for the zipper is a little blocked. Zipping and then buttoning guarantees no faux pas.
