So, in Trolley Wood, the following lyrics appear; "and then we cried / oh no". This is sometimes quoted without the line break, sometimes with, but never with sufficient punctuation. This leads my overactive and grammarical mind to ponder the following question. Are the lyrics...

And then we cried, "Oh no!"

or are they

And then we cried, oh no!

Now, before you think I'm just playing with semantics and picking nits here, the two options have vastly different meanings. In the first case, the subjects of the song are vocally crying out the words "Oh no!" to show their dismay for having unfound the wood. In the second case however, they are instead crying (presumably the type that involves tears) and this state of affairs has caused either them or someone to proclaim the interjection "oh no!" in response.

So, the question I pose is which of the two options (or maybe even a third?) do you interpret the song to be? And of course, if anyone here has an "official" answer, that too is most welcome so we can put to bed this ambiguity.

Ha, good question. I think it's the first one.

Haha, I've always wondered this, too.
I always took it to be the first interpretation where they are literally crying out "Oh no!"

I thought it was the second at that "oh no" just may have been put in for for Eisley filler crooning.

I've always thought it was the first option.

I'm pretty sure it's the first one, but I've always thought of it as the second one because it's so cute!

The only ones who can answer this question would be Sherri/Stacy... maybe Kim can help us out with this one?
