Someone should start a new academy for the real bands...the good
ones... and in 5 years, it'll make it to television, and in 10 years, it'll
make it to the National network and in 15 years...it'll be: (fill in the blank)
Of course, bands like Radiohead will come out on top every year. All of
the great indie bands will be championed... the host will be Conan... (you
make up the rest:)

and eisley will be in a panel of judges along with eisley forum members. Laughing

No, after 20 years it will be taken over and it will be just like the grammys

it's so true. and sad. *sigh* well, i guess all we can do is keep fighting the good fight, the good music fight that is.

But i wasn't joking. somebody should do something. Somebody MUST do
something... We need to see the rise of indie rock. The rise of everything
else but radio rock. How about if all the cool bands move to one location.
yeah. (digression begins now) And there would be all these great clubs
and every night, there'd be shows... and hotels for people coming to see
the shows...and call it: Indie World...home of pretty cool music.
And there would be big vegas-like neon lights; And Death Cab's faces
would be on the top of this building... and we'd all live in Biff World. ok.
bad idea. I'm not on drugs, but somebody should do something.

Nah, it can't be an island! It would be hard to go on tour if every good band is on an island. How about we just take over Montana. No one is using that.

i just laughed out loud at that one. i'll help you on this crusade for the freedom of good music. Montana would be an easy one to get. North Dakota too. let me know what you need to get this started!

Let's move to Tyler, Texas.
And our Walmart will become "IndieMart Super Center".

see even though i think most of us agree on how uninteresting the grammy's are, i am one to say that i wouldn't have it any other way:

here me out:
i think something that most of us are forgetting is that indie rock really wasnt meant to be embraced by mainstream culture. infact the whole "genre" (if you even want to call it that) was created after the grunge explosion in effort to still keep the music pure and un-commercialized. musicians were scared to see bands sign their souls to big corporate america and expose their scene to everyone. they still wanted to keep it at a comfortable level and avoid becoming "rock stars."
so in that effort bands started doing things themselves: starting their own labels, forming their own little scene underlying the modern rock/hip hop scene.

many musicians try to avoid this path (glitz and glamour). i dont blame them: who wants to be a big rock star anyway? you can still reach a number of people and not sell out arenas. plus having a close connection to a crowd is far more enjoyable AND IMPORTANT than not seeing them at all ever (outside of the 3 or 4 people who won backstage passes to your show from the local radio station).

so seeing indie artists at the grammy's kind of stikes me as odd. there are other awards that embrace solely indie groups and still maintain dignity and modesty. most of them are zines/e-zines/etc... pitchfork media being one of the best AND most accurate (we all have to remember that accuracy is important... check out their top 100 records of the 90's: it's on point)

groups who are spotlighted at the grammy's chose to take the path of mainstream stardom. i find that excellent. someone has to do it and if that's what he/she wish to do more power to them. and also, it's great to see some artists put a spin onto the modern pop charts with quirky song writing and fun albums (read: radiohead, coldplay, sigur ros, yeah yeah yeahs)

we have to remember that the grammy's are a whole other world. where music is seriously business. it doesnt just end at the musician, there are many people putting much more into it. it juxtaposes the indie scene where it is more focused on music and people rather than dollars and cents (que: amnesiac... now).
but whatever. it's entertaining for me to watch because really the grammy's seem fake to me. it seems like it is a play or something.

many of you say that there are better records that should have won over some of the records that received grammy's. sure there are: the shins chutes too narrow was the best record of the year in my opinion but to win a grammy?! i couldnt even imagine that happening! do you know what i mean? just because the record is better than outkast's doesnt necessarily mean that it should have been embraced at the grammy's. if it did, things would be put in a different perspective for me. it just doesnt seem right, really. that album isnt "grammy material" if that makes any sense. but it was the best record of the year. i encourage anyone who hasnt picked it up to go get it now.
and even though "hey ya" was an amazing single, speakerboxxx smoked the love below like a new york joint (can i get a witness??). overall, in my opinion, speakerboxxx was far superior to the love below. i could get into it but it'd take me too long. plus this post is too long as it is.
anyway, i hope what i said made any sense. sorry to be the devil's advocate: im a libra i tend to like balance in arguments (and many other things.)... sorry.

oh yeah, and that whole thing about dying. ELLIOT SMITH PEOPLE. come on. it's ELLIOT SMITH. the nick drake of our time. i would have been appauled if he wasnt recognized.

I agree, but I have one quick correction. Indie Rock was around long before the grunge explosion. IT really started with the punk movement in the mid 70s, but it had a name in the early 80s when bands like REM were tearing it up. It was that movement that the grunge stuff come out of a decade later.
