Announcing auditions for The Humming Woods: a new story for the stage. Written & Directed by Lindsey Greer Sikes with original music Composed by Paul Marbach.

Inspired by native Texas indie-rock band Eisley’s “Room Noises”, The Humming Woods tells the story of Winnie, a young girl full of life, and Hunter, the boy who loves her. But as their wedding day draws closer Winnie becomes unable to distinguish the world in which she is living from the marvelous things she imagines. Amongst this and the desires of Winnie's best childhood friend, the violent urges of her beau, the haunting memories of an Old Man and Old Woman, the whispers of bees and the coming arrival of the Dragon, Hunter and Winnie must find a way to hold on for fear of losing each other, or losing themselves. Using an entirely live a capella score to be sung by actors planted in the audience, the play deals with the conventions of theatrical reality and aims to challenge the role of the audience as not only spectator, but participant.

If this sounds like your kinda thang and you’re ready to dig your heels into an original work with some fresh new artists on the scene, please see below for character breakdowns:

GIRL [Winnie]; a dreamer, full of life and always in awe of it (16; any range, preferably Mezzo)

BOY [Hunter]; a good ‘ole boy in love with the Girl, though he fears her naivety (17)

OTHER GIRL [Ruth]; an ordinary girl who wishes for poetry, but is grounded in reality (16)

OTHER BOY [Tom]; a young man who loves with great passion, but is unable to show it ( 18 )

OLD WOMAN [Mary]; the girl’s mother, well worn by a long life & desiring of a love that’s faded with age (to be played by an actor in their 20’s)

OLD MAN [Euell]; the girl’s father, proud and constant, a wiser and more experienced version of the Other Boy (to be played by an actor in their 20’s)

In addition to the above characters we are seeking six singer-actors for more unconventional roles. These actors will perform within the audience, providing the a capella score to the piece and as the play progresses acting as the characters within the imagined world of the Girl. Much of the Mechanical's lines and action will be devised within the rehearsal room—actors with improvisational skills or simply a desire to play strongly preferred. And here’s the best part: you basically get to be the creator of your own character! All types & vocal ranges desired for:

MECHANICAL BETTY (F)
MECHANICAL HARVEY (M)
MECHANICAL PINKY (M)
MECHANICAL GOODIE (F)
MECHANICAL ADELAIDE (F)
MECHANICAL FAYE BELL (F)

Auditions will be held on Sunday, July 10th from 12-5pm at Hyde Park Theatre (511 W 43rd St.). Callbacks will be the following Monday, July 11th at the Dougherty Arts Center from 6-9pm.

**For singing roles (GIRL & MECHANICALS) please prepare a well-known song (lullabye/folk song/favorite tune), no longer than one minute, to perform in a style that best shows your abilities. Those auditioning for Mechanicals will also work with the Director for a few minutes in the rehearsal room to show off their improvisational skills. Please email thwauditions@gmail.com to schedule an audition appointment. You will receive sides via email for the role you will be reading.

The Humming Woods is being presented at the Blue Theater from October 6th – 23rd. Performances Thursday’s and Saturday’s at 8pm, and Sunday’s at 6pm. Actors must also be available for technical rehearsals from October 3rd – 5th.

"Inspired by native Texas indie-rock band Eisley’s Room Noises" = "just different enough that we don't have to pay royalties." Laughing

It sounds like a pretty innovative way to put on a play. I'd probably be more into the idea if it wasn't presented as an Eisley thing.

Fun....

I see no reference to geography (above the street level)

Where is this?

Interesting idea. I wonder if it will find its way onto Youtube.

^ Purely speculation, but talk of dragons suggests the scope extends somewhat beyond room noises

It sounds like a pretty innovative way to put on a play. I'd probably be more into the idea if it wasn't presented as an Eisley thing.

Artist A inspired Artist B to create something new, and Artist B decided to give A credit for said inspiration. I don't see how that is a bad thing. And if someone likes Eisley and sees the opening line of the show's description, they may be more inclined to support new theater. If someone goes to see the show and enjoys it, they may be more inclined to look up Eisley afterward.

It's not like the creators are shoving it down our throats. They mentioned it once. I hardly see them giving credit to the band as solely "presenting it as an Eisley thing" or trying to escape paying royalties.

*shrug* Well, I do, but I'm notoriously cynical. Smile Provided it's not peppered with cleverly arranged choral versions of Eisley songs, I wish them the best.

I might look into this then.

I think the idea is pretty fresh (aside from the whole being inspired by Room Noises thing). Plus, the whole audience planting reminds me of some 1920-1940s plays I read last semester.
