Would you compare the Chris Isaac sound to a 'modern' Roy Orbison?
Roy O had the reverb-y soaring vocals.

There's a lot of Roy Orbison & Elvis to what he does, but that's interspersed with a really dark, Tex-Mex & Southern Gothic Noir thing he gets into more often than not.

Put it this way, my expectation after listening to Chris Isaak for years, was that Nick Cave would end up sounding like a spooky evil version of Chris Isaak. I wasn't exactly right about that, but Isaak's got some brooding stuff, and the poppy singles that came out don't do the full body of his work anywhere near justice. That also made his Showtime show even funnier in contrast.

I got all that info, but didn't post here though. Funny how I think stereogum announced a while back and RS and Pitchfork were late on the draw and neither had a link to live performances of two of the songs like stereogum did.

From what I understand European journalists already had the record, but they only made an official Pax Am announcement recently (yesterday?).

I wonder if any of these songs have ties to older songs/unreleased albums?

Stereogum has the hook-up for 3 of the tracks from the record streaming. So far it's pretty much an acoustic affair and midtempo mellow CSN type stuff, which is well done.

Wil, have you heard the album?

After listening through it a few times I can understand how Lucky Now was the lead single. It has that nice layered guitar break that Ryan's music is known for to change it up a bit, whereas most of the rest of the songs kinda stay in a mellow mood for the entire song.

Cool that Ryan made an actual music video for Lucky Now that wasn't just a live video. Actually saw it on mtvU Monday morning.

Haven't heard it yet, couldn't get that stream to work, and haven't bought in any records from this last slew of releases. So many at once and I couldn't justify the expense or make a choice of just 1 given my concert going.

The kicker is I've been avoiding mellower stuff lately, and knew this was going to be some of that. It made me think of the Follow The Lights EP from the 5 or so tracks I've heard, which I prefer over Easy Tiger which had its moments. Follow the Lights was excellent, especially with the reworkings of This Is It and If I Am A Stranger... so my expectations for this record (they have a palm tree in common in the album art, as spurious as that is) are pretty high based on that. Gotta get my ducks in a row and decide on where I am going to get it from: the 1 mom and pop store I go to sporadically, best buy, or online??? But it will get got, that is for sure. And if I am not happy with it, I will be surprised and VERY let down.

NPR stream or one on his website?

I definitely wouldn't recommend it to someone as their first RA record. Lucky and Invisible Riverside are the only ones that seem kinda unique on first few listens, and maybe the closer. The rest are very same-y, all serious, not bad by any measure, but lack the memorable lyrics of past releases.

^ Never checked NPR, it was the Paxam stream that failed me. I just sorta let it go after that. I need to stay on NPR, I see that have the newest Joe Henry. His stuff in the last 10 years has been really up my alley, but I have a hard time figuring a point of reference by which to recommend him to people.
