Sea Post King

I'm always confused about whether Stacy or Sherri is singing parts of each song - except for Marvelous Things and Telescope Eyes, which have videos, which helps. Once I think its one of them, another person starts singing and then I think that's the same one, and the one before was the other one..::stratches head::

After listening to Eisley for almost a year I can now tell their voices apart perfectly... at least its very easy on the LP. Both of them sing on pretty much all the songs, so here is a list of who is singing when only one of them is singing.

Memories - pretty clear: stacy does low, sherri does high
Telescope Eyes - sherri
I Wasn't Prepared - sherri does first verse, stacy does second.
Golly Sandra - stacy
marvelous things - stacy; sherri's voice stands out more on the chorus.
brightly wound - sherri
lost at sea - sherri
my lovely - sherri
just like we do - stacy (supposedly with backup from chauntelle)
plenty of paper - sherri
one day i slowly floated away - stacy
trolleywood - sherri first verse, stacy chorus and second verse.

other songs...

sunfeet - sherri
the escaping song - stacy
vintage people - sherri
treetops - sherri, little pre-chorus thingy by stacy
over the mountains - stacy, bridge by sherri
lady of the wood - stacy
they all surrounded me - stacy
silver bugs - first verse stacy, chorus and second verse sherri

sea king is one of the more interesting songs vocally because sherri does the lower part in the verse and stacy does the higher, which is unusual.

Dang, you beat me to it, ideal! Hehe... Nice job. Cool

It does become extremely easy to tell them apart.

Wow that one surprised me. For some odd reason I always imagined that as being a Sherri song. I don't know why...

But then again I have not even close to mastered telling their voices apart.
It's pretty clear, I think, in Trolleywood, Memories, and I Wasn't Prepared though...
In songs when they alternately sing the lead vocals it's easy to tell the difference.
Sherri's voice is higher and sort of thin-ish I guess. And Stacy's seems more full but generally lower.
Or that's what I get.

Actually, there's a clip of them playing that one in rehearsals a couple of weeks before starting to record the album, and Sherri is singing lead. It does sound like more of her sort of melody, but Stacy's voice works better for the song (in my opinion).

By the way, the clip that I mentioned can be seen here. There's a snippet of it during the first part of "Clip 6c," which is under the Preproduction Clips section.

You know, I've watched that clip so many times, and listened to the song so many times, and I never really considered the idea that it wasn't Sherri singing the first verse. I thought they switched on "All the war horses..." but it makes much more sense if Stacy sings the whole of it.

I say it doesnt matter. The only thing I think that matters is that they both have marvelous voices.

Stacy's vocals are more musically pure, full

Sherri has little vocal "imperfections" but not really.......her voice is unique and i like it. like when she sings "you" or "to" it's more like "yew" or "tew" kind of. but it's definitely not a negative thing in any way. Sherri's voice also seems to almost shred through the speakers. kind of in the way that Johnny Cash has this booming low voice that can never be covered up even by a wall of sound, Sherri kind of does that in a higher register.

just because i talk about Sherri's vocals more, it doesn't mean anything. i like both voices and they combine and contrast in interesting ways.

that's an interesting analysis of their voices from what i presume is a learned technical point of view... i personally find sherri's voice more compelling more often, but that might also be because she writes more dramatic songs and has more songs overall.

stacy's best moments are usually more subdued.. off the top of my head i can think of: 1) chorus of golly sandra, 2) second time she says "dear did you know" on JLWD, 3) my favorite eisley song: the escaping song! the variety of beautiful things she does is showcased very well in that song (as well as her lyrical prowess, i might add).

sherri's "moments of ecstacy" are all over the place, and perhaps these are those same moments of "imperfection"... sherri's voice live is definitely better than in the studio, where it loses some of its genuineness. however, her studio vocals are still compelling on tracks such as plenty of paper, memories, and the chorus of i wasn't prepared. both in the studio and in person, sherri's voice shines when it is employed at a higher pitch. my favorite sherri vocal moment: live performance of sunfeet from L.A for which there is a video... "with our laughter, a bright white sound/i'll build a castle that won't fall down"

actually, on that same live recording of sunfeet is one of my favorite stacy moments: at the end of the second chorus before the bridge and the bridge itself. pure stacy loveliness!!!

i was afraid someone might take my use of "imperfection" and twist it a little bit. Sherri is the reason i got into the band in the first place (look at my avatar). those songs she was cranking out at the time (Mr Pine, Sun Feet, Tree Tops and more) just blew me away. unfortunately, a lot of the songs that made me fall in love with Eisley didn't even make the album. hopefully they will get proper release on the next album or on EP's.

too bad Vintage People didn't make the album. i think that's my favorite recent Sherri song, but Plenty of Paper is really growing on me.

(above statements are assuming that the main singer is also the main songwriter of said songs)

i think that is a safe assumption.

i also agree about my favorite songs not making the album, which for me are escaping song and sunfeet. i really hope that these are saved for the second album instead of just being released as b-sides or not seeing the light of day overall.

yes yes it seems everyone agrees there were several extremely great songs that were not put on the CD..hopefully eisley will hear us enough to do something about it, and i think they will.
