That's right, Bitch Magazine gave Eisley a fantastic review. (My friend bought me a gift subscription. Don't ask.) Here's the complete text: Bitch Magazine wrote: Imagine being raised religious in a tiny Texas town, homeschooled with no cable TV and frew friends outside of your own family. What would you do to entertain yourself? The four siblings in Eisley--Chauntelle, Sherri, Stacy, and Weston Dupree [sic]--and their friend Jon Wilson thankfully turned to music. You haven't witnessed this kind of familial, dewy-skinned purity and harmonic splendor since the Corrs or even Hanson. On the strength of one EP and their live shows, Eisley was invited to tour with Coldplay in 2003, when the youngest member had just entered her teens. So did these preternaturally talented young musicians make a deal with the devil or what?
Though their debut album is polished and well packaged, it doesn't sound like they sold their souls to make it. The sounds are epic and resonant, thanks in part to production by industry heavyweights Rob Cavallo (Green Day) and Rob Schapf (Beck, Elliott Smith), but lead singers Sherri and Stacy hit the high notes without the aid of modern technology. Ringing like church bells, the sisters' voices take center stage with the sincerity and other-worldliness of a mini-choir: They can stretch a three-letter word into five syllables, meandering all over the map in verses, but they know when to focus and isolate a powerful melody in the chorus, balancing chaos and order. Yet there's also enough strangeness to keep things interesting. "Memories" is an eerie interchange between a wife and her dearly departed husband; "Telescope Eyes" touches on the cruelty of rejection; and "Marvelous Things," the first single, is like a carousel--at once charming and a little spooky. As you might guess, there's boundless optimism here as well. "Lost at Sea" features the exultant chorus "Congratulations, because we made it all the way home" over a bed of shimmering cymbals. And with its steel guitar and cheery drumbeat, "Golly Sandra" is undeniably joyous. Listening to Room Noises could make you feel like you've fallen down the rabbit hole. In fact, everything about Eisley is a bit hallucinogenic, and listeners who need their music to be angry, ironic, or bitter will probably find the band cloying. Room Noises speaks to the part of you that's clean and wistful. If there's even the smallest scrap of hope inside you, Eisley will find it. _________________ INTELLECT AND ROMANCE OVER BRUTE FORCE AND CYNICISM Smokemonster |

cgar7 wrote: haha what kinda of magazine is this ? The motto is "Feminist response to pop culture." And that's pretty much it. Inside are articles on female stereotypes in Sin City, the approach the WB takes to abortion in its drama shows, pain and fatigue as a feminist issue, and the like. It's actually a fascinating publication. I think Andrew might like it more than I do; I'm considering forwarding my subscription to him. _________________ INTELLECT AND ROMANCE OVER BRUTE FORCE AND CYNICISM Smokemonster |
