Clementine: Joel, I'm not a concept. too many guys think I'm a concept or I complete them or I'm going to make them alive, but I'm just a $#@! up girl who is looking for my own peace of mind. Don't assign me yours. Joel: I remember that speech really well. Clementine: I had you pegged, didn't I? Joel: You had the whole human race pegged. Clementine: Probably. Joel: I still thought you were going to save me. Even after that. How happy is a blameless lover's lot! The world forgetting, by the world forgot, Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind! Each prayer accepted, and each wish resigned. -Alexander Pope, "Eloisa to Abelard" When so many are lonely, or seem to be lonely, it would be inexcusably selfish to be lonely alone. -Tennessee Williams Are we so self-focused - engrossed in trying to find someone to complete us and make us happy that we miss the fact that that's all everybody wants? This is from my MySpace thing, but it's kind of the idea I got from Telescope Eyes. Metaphorically speaking. Whoa, you humor me today, Calling me out to play, With your telescope eyes, metal teeth, I can't be seen with you. Please don't make me cry, Please don't make me cry, I'm just like you I know you know, I'm just like you so leave me alone. I mean, this could be taken literally, like the monster in the closet that makes you cry, or she's crying because she has to send it away, because of other people judging her and it. I'm just like you so leave me alone takes on more of a meaning this way, I think. And it kind of makes the point that, yes, we are all the same in what we're looking for - like in the other quotes. And in the video it says [Now we are alone] on the closet wall. I don't know how to explain it in words without sounding too preachy. In the making of video, she says it has a literal meaning - about just growing up and learning to ignore it. But I liked the song originally, because I really looked into it this way. Personally, I like it better as a statement about relationships, the vapidness of culture, and people's tendency to judge based on appearance. Just thought I'd share that. Peace. _________________ "It's all about the wordplay." -Jason Mraz "When all of this music sounds like something you want to say, then it will have been of all worth, ever. That's a good take on it. I mean, when I first heard telescope eyes, I thought it was about a kid that was bullied who was trying to say that he or she is just like everyone else and doesn't deserved to be picked on. Then, I saw in the "making of the video" that it was about scary things in people's houses. So, yeah. I like to think of it at a level of people and relationships as well. |

Yeah. I think Kim said (or maybe Sherri said this) That they were only talking about the video concept and that this concept did not necessarily directly relate to the meaning of the song. The song can be about what you want it to be about, but it is generally making a statement about teasing ,bullies, etc. It shows both points of view, but the lasting message I get from it is that we are all really the same deep down insideā¦. and it just shows the sadness and hurt that comes when people have these superficial notions of superiority that allows them to treat others poorly. _________________ -Brooke |

I've always seen the video as a seperate story, a different take on the 'I'm just like you' idea, both for the girl that has to stop believing in the monsters (Sherri) vs. the rest of the kids, and the monster itself vs. the girl. I don't think the song and the video are supposed to be about the exact same thing... the video actually reminds me more of 'Sleepy Head' than 'Telescope Eyes'. So maybe they were going back to that concept, with the video? To me, the video shows how when you start to 'grow up' and stop believing in the monster in the closet, part of your imagination and childhood goes away with it (a recurring theme in Eisley's music, which is partly why I love them so much). _________________ ♥ Love, Jamie ♥ |
