Three-band tour provides variety, excitement and Heat

With Lollapalooza playing only in Chicago this year and the first Zooma tour canceled before it ever got off the ground, the summer didn't look promising for traveling multi-act concerts.

But an intriguing triple bill, which could supply some of the excitement missing this season, will play San Francisco on Sunday and Santa Cruz on Monday.

Hot Hot Heat, the punky dance-rock band from Victoria, British Columbia, headlines this Warner Brothers Records party, which also features the Texas dream-pop quintet Eisley and the New Orleans band World Leader Pretend, a purveyor of majestic modern rock.

During the tour so far, the turnout has been strong. ``There's been a line when we get there,'' says World Leader Pretend vocalist and guitarist Keith Ferguson, ``and it's always packed by the time we go on stage.''

Pleasant surprises

The songs on the band's self-titled major-label debut are often enveloped in regal strings, brass and percussion. On ``Dreamdaddy'' and ``Lovey Dovey,'' for example, the melodies are hummable and the orchestral treatments full of pleasant surprises.

The three bands ``don't necessarily sound like each other,'' but each attracts ``a young, open-minded indie-rock'' crowd, Ferguson says by phone from Portland, Maine.

He says he has been impressed by Hot Hot Heat, whose ``shows are spirited and energetic.'' And though he isn't familiar with Eisley's recordings, the group puts on ``a fantastic live show,'' he says.

Eisley singer-guitarist Sherri DuPree agrees that the tour is going well. The lineup and music are ``working just fine,'' she says via e-mail. ``Playing shows with a band like Hot Hot Heat feels pretty normal to us, considering the bands we've been out with -- Coldplay, Snow Patrol, New Found Glory. The Hot Hot Heat crowd likes catchy, melodic music.'' But, she adds, ``more and more, people get bored at shows where all the bands sound the same, so it's better to mix it up a little.''

With two of DuPree's sisters, her brother and bassist Jon Wilson rounding out the lineup, Eisley draws from the ethereal wing of Brit pop and the thematic and stylistic ambiguity of American college radio to create its music. The band from Tyler released a pair of EPs before its first full-length disc, ``Room Noises,'' came out in February. From ``Golly Sandra,'' with its layered vocals and steel guitar, to the gentle lullaby ``One Day I Floated Away,'' Eisley's music sounds simultaneously familiar and fresh.

``We definitely have a lot of our friends and fans coming out . . . and it seems like Hot Hot Heat's eclectic, fun-loving, melodically inclined fans are OK with our songs,'' DuPree says. ``We'll see how it goes the next time we roll into these towns. Hopefully we'll have won over a few fans.''

For its part, Hot Hot Heat blends its punk-rock roots with the new-wave tradition of the late '70s to concoct infectious dance-pop anchored by the punchy vocals, piano and organ of Steve Bays.

After putting out its own singles, EPs and a debut album, Hot Hot Heat attracted widespread attention with its second CD, ``Make Up the Breakdown,'' released in 2002 by Sub Pop. By the time the group started work on its third disc in 2003, there was considerable buzz.

Dance or just listen

That disc -- ``Elevator,'' released in April -- is well-suited for either listening or dancing. The memorable ``Jingle Jangle'' paints a portrait of an amoral salesman. ``Island of the Honest Man'' gets fists pumping.

The band's bass guitarist, Dustin Hawthorne, says, ``Stylistically, there's a lot of influence from hard-core punk bands . . . that has rubbed off on us, and it definitely shows in the music.

``Granted, we're not a punk band anymore,'' he says by phone from Providence, R.I., ``but the roots are there, definitely. That's why we appeal to a lot of the hard-core kids. The dudes in Finch and A.F.I. really like our band, and I think it's because we have that hard-core feeling to us.''
