(hi duprees) ANYWAY... there's this rockin new "service/site/thing" that's coming out soon that'll let indie artists make some moneh with their music. Its too hard to explain, so I’ll sum up -
Artists sign up their fans/random humans up to meet a requirement.
Fans/random humans pay 8 dollars(i think) a month to LEGALLY dl all the music they'd want from any of the bands in the network, and all that money goes to the artists through some complex and mathematix driven algorithm based on popularity and downloads ect... from what i hear minimum monthly income to artists is 300 a monthish once you meet your subscriber quota. Anyway, it seems cool to me, and i just thought I’d give ppl a heads up, since i know a lot of you are musicians yourselves. I'm not allowed to link it, but keep checking back and I’ll link the site when i get an OK.
An outlet to hear underground/undiscovered bands for listeners and a way to bring in some cash for all us indie "rock stars" sounds cool, or am i wrong? gimme some feedback.

I think it's really really cool and convenient to me. The only reason why I use Kazaa is to download stuff from indie bands. And when I do find a song I like, I buy their album. But if this is legal, yeah, I'll pay $8 a month to use this.

I'd like to get more information on this! Smile Can you PM it to me?

i would pay. as long as i didn't have to commit. i'm scared of committment, evidently. how many bands are we talking about? could any band sign up to this or would it be like... a LABEL doing it. is this a possible reality or some great idea.

((i'll help))

It's going to go live in about 3 months. Any band can sign up, and i think its like 50 members using u as a reference to start making money, so like, at a concert you play at, pass out fliers and chances are you'll have your minimum. Truth be told me uncle(not Boyd) is this computer guru/crackpot inventor, and actually came up with a good idea. I'll post the site here when he thinks the site is ready to look at, or whatever he's waiting for, but once this thing gets big, which i think it will... it's gona give some competition to record labels. There's a LOT more to it, (uploading tracks so other musicians can collaborate to make a song, ect...) Eventually there will be tours set up with the most popular bands. The way it looks in theory, i can easily see any good band in the network making several k a month. Anyway, sorry, i should have been a frigin preacher... i talk too much when i get stuck on an idea. lol. have fun "y'all"

(p.s. SPELLCHECK ONLY FOUND ONE MISTAKE IN THAT WHOLE THING! I'M GETTING BETTER!)
(p.s. P.S. i know... sad huh?)

I don't mean to rain on your parade - I think it sounds like a great idea, seeing how spending $8 to dl songs that - but you'll be competing with a number of other sites that offer similar services.

I defnitely suggest you check out the Internet Underground Music Archive (http://artists.iuma.com/) where underground bands can host songs, sell CDs, connect with other bands, etc. I know you're planning to target bands a bit more established than those on the IUMA, but the IUMA has some pretty cool search features (esp the regional search for locating bands - I'm listening to a pretty sweet band out of DC that I just discovered 5 minutes ago because of the regional search option on IUMA). MP3z are a great way to learn about new bands, and it'd be really great if the site you're developing makes it easy for the user to find out about all sorts of bands they've not heard before, as well as being able to read about the band and listen to some clips of their songs, etc. From a fan's perspective, it'd be great if you develop this site into a palce where we can browse and find new artists - without having to subscribe - and then allowing us to actually dl the songs once we've found some bands whose music we'd like to buy, but we cannot find in normal music stores.

just my 2cents.

I don't think I'd subscribe every single month of the year, but think of it this way - your typical CD costs anywhere between $10 and $20 and that's assuming you can find the band you're looking for. In most cases, you'll be able to, but there are some bands out there whose albums you can't find. I'm pretty certain that if I was to walk into a store tomorrow and try and buy Eisley's EP, there'd be NO way I could find it. With all the crap Brit-pop and Euro-techno trash in good ol Woolworth's CD section, I'd be lucky to an album by Belle and Sebastian (which has the advantage of being a Scottish indie band - I'm in Scotland at the moment). there'd be no way to find anything by Eisley, but I'd really like to be able to hear more of their songs and prob buy their EP. This site idea would allow me to listen and buy their music - despite the fact I cannot find it in stores over here - while also spending less money than I would on a regular CD. Sounds like a pretty good deal.

I went and checked out that site, and it's actually pretty cool... lol. I think i misrepresented the idea though, if you think it would be similar. This "site", will be sort of an open alternative to record labels for band that would otherwise have no way of going public or making money besides gigs. It's not just a way to let people hear you, or for people to find music, but once it gets going it will be (as best as i can put it) a PAYING artist/consumer driven "record label" that wont force you to change your music, style, personality, ect... it will support musicians without taking away the individuality and diversity of the indie scene, and that’s what I’m so psyched about. Anyway, every time I see the guy he yammers about all the functionality, and it's gona rock, and being that there are so many bands that could benefit from it in Tyler, (and that my cousins come from there, which gives it some precedence in my mind, lol) i feel the need to edify the populace. I know that all the members on this forum aren’t from Tyler, but a lot are, so don’t feel secluded or downtrodden or oppressed. I'd hate to think that i oppressed someone. /cry.

ps... god i rant. forgive my long posts. i only get on here when I’m tired.
lol.
