my initial hunch would be to say that in no way is it a sport.

it is clearly a game.

It is a sport for the mind.

Let's see what the dictionary says. In relation to game/sport it says about sport:

1 a.Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
.A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.

these are all active, using muscles and the body.

the same dictionary (uh, dictionary.com) doesn't really have anything useful.

But chess is a game.

but...bu-?

what?

how do you come to that conclusion?

I've been asking on MSN. Well, my name is "Is chess a game, or a sport? answers on a postcard..." (And yes, that comma was intended to be there), and one dude PMed me with "it's neither". I got there too late to ask him why.

i guess it could be considered a sport since sports require tactic and strategy and chess definitely encorporates that..but then again it could be considered a game because most sports require some type of physical exursion.

i guess its just a matter of how you look at it

Every definition of sport that I find claims that a sport requires physical activity. Chess doesn't require any more physical activity than using a remote control or playing cards, so I'd just classify it as a game.

Physical activity - using one's muscles

Picking up a Queen and knocking over a Bishop with it - using one's muscles

Chess - a sport

any game that can be played by a computer is a game, not a sport. It doesn't require physical activity.
