 Post subject: The last half of Room NoisesPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2006 4:21 pm 
Y'know ... with all the talk of Room Noises just not being the album it could have been, I still think the point from Golly Sandra to the end (excluding Lost at Sea, sometimes) is a one of my favorite stretches of album ever. I was going to say from "Brightly Wound" until the end (again excluding "Lost"), but I've gotten way too into the countrified "Golly Sandra" to leave it out now. I love "Brightly Wound" with a passion. And people who take note of the production/label/management issues should note that it wasn't recorded with the rest of the songs (I think I'm right on that one). I won't get into that mess. But it could be half the song it was originally meant to be, and it's still one of my favorites ever. And this skips us over to a solid five-song bloc that I consider among the best in my collection, warts and all. There's the chilling "Just Like We Do." The pace picks up again for "Plenty of Paper," which features some perfect synth, after flirting with cheesiness (but missing it) with the intro. And of course, we have the multi-faceted "One day I slowly floated away," possibly the most-complex and mature song on the album. And it all caps with the spartan and fun "Trolleywood." A little glimpse of the catchy pop and soulful, imaginitive simplicity that is the core of Eisley (at least to me). Not to say I don't like the other tracks on the album (I mostly love them, just maybe not their production or the order they're in), I just think this chunk of the album is so amazing, and since we haven't talked much about songs or "Room Noises" lately, I thought I'd foment some chatter. Especially since we have a new album around the corner, and this album will really be yesterday's news. This has been mostly rambling, but I encourage anyone who might have given up on "Room Noises" to give these tracks another try. I still love it, but that doesn't mean I can't anticipate the new stuff. The other day I found myself listening to the ep's happy as a clam. I think Room Noises is great. I stand with my long-time opinion. I like every song on Room Noises except "Telescope Eyes". I was never a big fan of that song, and just could not get with the newer version. "Just Like We Do" gets my bid for best song on the album. That and it is amazing live. _________________ Audioscrobbler Now

i don't mind the newer version so much anymore. my big problem with room noises was that i really could never listen to brightly wound, lost at sea, and my lovely, even as early as having the album for a week (also TEs, but that's a different story). brightly wound was a good song, i'll leave it at that as to respect jamie's wishes. lost at sea was a good song, i'll leave it at that as i assume jamie's wishes apply to this song as well. my lovely... the drums, the repeated verse, and the riff sounds sort of cheesy to me. thumbs down. so i have this 3 song stretch that i would skip over, from MTs, ahead to JLWD, i would listen. this tired out the album rather quickly now that i look back on it. |

I often just skip to those last four songs. They are golden. Amazing stuff. But I agree. I often skip over 6-8...in my opinion the weakest section of the album. I'll never like any version of Lost at Sea better than the casette one. The version on this album just bothered me. I have never liked My Lovely, I think it is a very cheesy (although admittedly catchy) song. And Brightly Wound is okay. I enjoy up until after the intertwining voices verse. And then the song goes flat for me. The lyrics are sometimes too fluffy, but it is a very pretty song musically. I also don't particularly like TE. Any of the versions after the first. Still, all that aside, I can't get over the genius of the last four tracks. Just Like We Do, Plenty of Paper, One Day I Slowly Floated Away, and Trolley Wood are all incredible. So that makes 8 songs I LOVE and 4 I am not so crazy about. That's pretty good. *shrug* I am really looking forward to this next album. _________________ -Brooke |
