Like many of you I followed Sherri's link for the pirate painting to the Howard Pyle page of 100 Years of Illustration website and was pretty impressed by all the illustrators from that time who were influenced by Pyle. If you've ever have seen a Frank Frazetta painting you can see the Pyle influence even though he was a generation or two removed. Hit the link if you haven't already visited the page. You won't be disappointed. I like Pyle's fantasy based paintings and illos more than the historical stuff because of the nice contrast the fantastic elements make with the figures which are so firmly rooted in reality. I'm hoping Eisley will stick to that thematic idea of fantasy which is rooted in reality. I'd wouldn't like the music to get all serious even as their lives get more serious. Life tends to head in the serious direction, despite anyone's best efforts, but being a fan of the fantastic and silly I'm hoping Eisley will always have a good supply of both. I guess we all know about Sherri's interest and work in illustration. Plenty of evidence on this site. Its always interesting stuff and I hope she never gives it up for video games. LC members have also posted their drawings and I'd like to see more of them as well. For those who are using photo reference I would suggest they only use the photos as a departure point for the drawing rather than just copy the photo as closely as possible. Maybe swap out the actual background of the photo with a dojo or a sailing ship. Maybe dress the Duprees as ... oh I don't know ... ninjas or pirates? |

If anyone is really interested in Pyle illustrations, you should check out museums in southeast PA and in northern DE, if you are ever in the area. I go to grad school for paintings conservation in the area and there are some really great small museums with tons of Howard Pyle and stuff by the Wyeths. Not to mention a great Andrew Wyeth show at the PMA in philly. Lots of pirates and mermaids and gorgons and birds and dogs and foxes and swordfights... http://www.brandywinemuseum.org/ http://www.delart.org/ Two of the better ones. Enjoy if you're ever 'round. _________________ it feels like midnight, but it's just six o'clock |
