I think it's only offensive if you say it and have a mean face on.

It's not offensive if you're laughing/smiling/or joking though.

i don't find it offensive, but i'm sure many people do. it's a challenge against their religion and their morality and their conviction as a whole.

if people say that to me, i'd be like, yeah, i'll see ya there.

or when i'm in a bad mood i'll sic my dogs on them

I don't find it offensive. Mostly because I never actually hear people say that, except in movies and TV.

If said meaningfully, it's offensive, as you're basically wishing someone to a life in damnation. Which, I'm sure you can imagine, is a pretty nasty thing. So you're condemning them to the worst eternal life imaginable. THat's very very strong hatred. Aside from anything else, we don't call the shots on who goes to hell and who goes to heaven. So you're also judging that person.

If said jokingly, well, it's a joke.

But I don't think it should be said at all, just to be on the safe side. Smile

following up on what mad_sam said, i believe that if it is used by someone, and they mean it (i don't mean actually wanting them to go to hell, but rather just not using it as a joke,) they probably have good reason to be use the phrase. they were probably offended in the first place by someone else, in order to say it and mean it.

i don't really use this phrase in many cases, myself. it's not that i find it offensive or serious, but instead, it's just not my comeback of choice.

A funny, but true story:
Ok, so I'm listening to Muse's new album.
On the first single, "Take a Bow" Matt sings, "go to hell, you will burn in hell..."
He was singing this, RIGHT when I read the thread title.
I guess Muse is pretty offensive. Crying or Very sad

The trick is to say it casually.
