This people magazine article about the movie says, "Craig fans will be disappointed at how briefly the 007 star shows up." Sad

It also said "Note: Compass is too scary, and complicated, for kids under 10."

They only gave it 2 stars, saying some of the characters weren't very well established in the beginning and that "the ending, setting up a sequel, is a cheat."

I guess I'll have to see for myself!

I just got back from the theatre, and I can safely say Golden Compass was everything I'd hoped it would be. The editing was a little rough--I have a feeling a director's cut would be at least twice as long, and there were times I felt like I'd missed something, though most of that was covered in a few seconds of exposition.

Dakota Blue Whateverhernameis was wonderful, considering that 95% of her lines were spoken to a character that wasn't even onscreen at the time (Pan, Iorek, or Ragnar). Daniel Craig was so badass, though I wish he'd been a bit more present. Nicole Kidman was meh; they actually managed to make her look ugly now and then, which I didn't think was possible.

And the bear fight. Oh man. This was the only thing in the film that could have earned it a PG-13 rating, and it was only a couple seconds at the end. I was kind of shocked, really.

I agree with most of the reviews I've read by people who have actually read the book: the movie ended way too abruptly. Beyond that I really have no qualms with it. The visuals were stunning (steampunk steampunk steampunk!), the script was well-crafted, and I didn't feel like I was being pandered to even though this was yet another film about small people saving the world.

You clearly didn't watch 30 Rock last week, or the horrific episode of The Suite Life of Zach & Cody that I was subjected to recently. The hatred, anger, resentment, and unfair stereotypes are spread around evenly. Claiming that Christians get it more than anyone else is the Coliseum Complex. Guess what? Nobody's feeding us to lions anymore. We have the freedom to worship as we please, just like everyone else, so why all the whining about persecution?

What episode of the Suite Life are you talking about?

The one where they meet the Indian prince. Sooooo many incredibly insulting racial and religious stereotypes in one episode. Jokes about elephant gods and thick accents do not encourage tolerance for other cultures.

Now I admit I've seen that episode only once, but I don't recall anything particularly bad about it. Thick accents aren't going to cause intolerance. If you want to say it propagates stereotypes, you can certainly make that argument. I don't think any of the stereotypes were really offensive or harmful, but there's certainly a case to be made. But to talk about tolerance? No kid is going to think less of Indians because of this episode. Moreover, in the course of watching it, they will probably see pro-multiculturalist messages during the breaks (in addition to more stuff about the ever-growing High School Musical empire).

An observation: TV shows are filled with caricatures; average, totally-realistic people and scenarios are boring. Extreme representations illustrate ideas more clearly in art. If this means we end up with stereotypes on TV, who cares? There's not really a need for the prince to be a complex and fully realized character. Don't think stereotype; think archetype.

Archetypes are an important part of storytelling, yes. But archetypes are not based on a character's culture. The prince in the Suite Life episode could have been from any nation and had any accent and would still have been a prince. They made him a prince from India so they could throw in jokes about Ganesh. I agree it's probably not going to breed intolerance in children, but is it really the best way for youngsters (the one I watched the show with is four years old) to be introduced to that culture?

But to be fair what do you think about Apu Nahasapeemapetilon?

I think his culture has been exploited for laughs now and then. I think the writers of The Simpsons have moved beyond that more recently, either because they ran out of jokes or they came to their senses (probably the former). And I think he's my favorite Springfieldian.

I actually watched the episode in which Liz reports her Middle Eastern neighbors to Homeland Security (though that's only the second episode I've ever seen, including "Blind Date," which was free on iTunes). I think, if anything, the show had a positive message about making assumptions. But this is drifting really off topic.

The overall message of the episode was positive, but it illustrated (via satire, a very useful form of storytelling) the kind of prejudice that is very much alive in the world and not at all limited to Christians, and thus it supports my point.

How did we get from armored bears to religious discrimination in the media, anyway? Laughing

I think discrimination can be summed up in a brief story:

So my Jewish friend goes to his class one day and the topic of discrimination comes up. At one point a black girl says something along the lines of "well, Jewish people don't know what its like to be black. They've never been oppressed or to be enslaved or anything."

Completely ignore 4000 years of slavery, exile and genocide? Surely you jest madam?
But no...she doesn't. And neither does anyone else when they open their mouths about things they don't understand. No one knows anything about anyone else's oppressions or discrimination or who hates who in the what now. Including all of us, even if you think you know (maybe you read a book) you're a liar. So stop. Don't call anyone oppressed or discriminated (yourself included) just...stop...because you're wrong even if you're right.

Hello.

I've tried to read as much of these posts as I could.

I'd like to say that this forum has many very intelligent people on it, and there are definitely some great arguments.

The controversy over this movie is something that has frustrated me for a while. I think it is important to note that the book the movie was based on was published in like..1995 or 1996, yet it is only recently that there is a lot of hype about it. Not that there wasn't any hype back when the book was written--there might have been; I don't know. These books are award-winning books. Yes, he make his beliefs very clear, but I hardly feel that those beliefs should be the determining factor for deciding to see a movie.

However, I feel that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Personally, I will see the movie. It looks interesting to me. I just urge you that if you know people that don't want to see it (perhaps because 100,000 people on Facebook told them not to), to try to read into it (as many of you have done), and encourage them to do so as well. I think anyone that is making a stand about something should be educated on whatever it is they feel to stand for. That way if you or someone you know chooses not to see the movie, they have a reason behind it, other than "100,000 people on Facebook told me the movie was about killing God and so I'm not seeing it."

That is all.

Setting up for a sequel? There are three books...

It's almost as bad as the same complaints I heard (ending without finishing the story) when Lord of the Rings came out a few years ago.

Saw it yesterday, I thought it was pretty good! The changes and the ending was saddening though.

Well, I know that...

What, should it have been "THE sequel" ? Because there will be a 2nd..and a 3rd movie. Whatever, haha, it was probably just saying that the ending left you hanging because it needed to leave you in suspense for the movies to come, but that it made you feel cheated in the end.

There is definitely a bad way to do that. Or a couple, really ... But I won't see which this movie uses for long time, if ever. ha ha.
