She clearly lost her mother's ring in a drain and needed the gum to put on the end of a stick, to get it out, or her mother would have, well you know.

A truly inspiring story, le@h!

Seriously. Laughing I don't even let my 5 year old chew gum. I guess there are 10 calories per stick or whatever... Rolling Eyes

this is a little off topic but i heard someone tell me this recently, when the founder of kentucky fried chicken harlan sanders sold his recipes to be franchised ,one of his requests was if anyone came to a restaurant with his name on it and was in need , the restaurant would feed that person, now i dont know if thats an urban legend , or truth , but the point is people are basically good, people will help another person most of the time , there are more honest people than crooks etc etc etc , and of course there is always costco and sams if you go on the weekend you can eat your way through the store on samples,(old college trick)

Stealing will never be necessary for my survival so I voted no.

i probably would if i really had to.
my brother spent the summer in new york doing some horrible commision based job that didnt end up to be what he had hoped for. he had to steal a few times and felt really bad, but he had to eat somehow...

good question.
I would be more apt to dealing with it myself.

I would like to say that I would ask for help before stealing,
but I don't know if that's true.
I am so far removed from that situation that I really can't fathom it.

Perhaps I would steal and give the food to all the other starving people around me. A modern day Robin Hood. We need one of those.

The government already has that role, as I explained previously. And the fallback beyond that is the charities. And as Ali explained so well, why not just get a job? But seriously, there is so much free food around, how can anyone need to steal it in America?

Some examples from my state:

^^ i agree with you. there are many organizations and charities out there that feed the hungry. i lived homeless for two days as part of an immersion program. i panhandled, busked, ate at shelters, etc. i can say that people are out there who are more than willing to give you a helping hand. stealing is and should definitely be last resort.

with that said, i think that the reason my brother stole from markets was because a) he is very prideful and b) he simply did not have the time to beg or travel to the nearest shelter.

Stealing food to live if you're starving strips you of your dignity? According to whom?

The way I see it, food and water are basic human rights. Unfortunately, they are ones that a lot of the people in this word are being denied, for various reasons, many of them stemming from the folks at the "top".

Wrong wrong wrong wrong.
Food and water are yours if you supply it to yourself.
It's not "the man's" fault that people in this country are starving.
In almost every case, it's their own.
