 Post subject: I have a suggestion for Eisley...Posted: Wed Jan 07, 2004 11:41 am 
This is just a small suggestion from a fan, but I personally think that the new album should have more guitar playing in it rather than keys and vocals. In other words, there should be more songs like "Pretender" or "Head Against the Sky" than songs like "The Winter Song" or everything else on Marvelous Things. Just to say the truth, I really did like Laughing City more than Marvelous Things, partly. When I first heard Marvelous Things, it did bore me a little but it grew on me anyway. I know, as a songwriter myself, that you can't just make "more songs" that sound like your old stuff, but I mean that it should be harder with more Rock (I guess you could say) like Radiohead. Haha, don't ask me how I thought this up. I figured it out this morning when I was playing a mix CD I made with a mixture of Laughing City, Marvelous Things, and the rare stuff, and I easily made a distinction between EP's. Dude, just let them write how they wanna write. It's funny, because I was kind of thinking the opposite...  I think it'd be great to have a handful of harder, more "rock" songs, but I love songs that don't depend so much on guitar, or where guitar isn't thrown on just because it "should" be. I guess I've slowly become less and less attracted to guitar-heavy new material (keep in mind that I'm a guitar player myself). Whatever the band chooses to do, I'm sure it'll be wonderful--I just think it'd be a bit much to have the majority of the songs be very guitar-driven, unless there are really interesting, engaging guitar ideas (no offense at all intended to Chauntelle and Sherri, because your guitar parts are great, but I tend to like the more subtle stuff that compliments the songs). I don't know, I'm not really as opinionated on the topic as I probably sound...

Hey now. Without posts like this, what's the point of a message board? More power to dylans_vagabond for having the guts to make that suggestion. If those Eisley folks want to write predominantly keyboard/vocal songs, that's fine. But maybe this thread will have an impact, and they might change one or two songs for the better because of it. I like the guitar stuff, but I also like the atmospheric stuff. Yesterday I was listening to "Lost at Sea" from the video Boyd made and wondering what it would be like as more of a guitar-driven song... My point is, ideas like this keep music fresh and challenge the artists to mix things up a bit. I didn't mean my reply to sound attacking or anything. I just figured that if dylans_vagabond wants to post his opinion, I might as well post mine, and we can have a nice little discussion about it. I don't feel threads like this are an attempt to pressure the band into conforming to what the fans want, but they could seem that way I think... Maybe it's just best to either be more specific about what we think the band's strengths or weaknesses are, what'd work well on certain songs, etc. It is kind of silly to expect a band to shape their entire sound around what we want, but I agree that it's all fine and good to have threads about it. And what's the point of having a thread about it if no one is allowed to have an opposing view on the subject?

This sounds stupid, but I'm a real songwriter, I've written many songs including 2 EPs and an album that I recorded, produced and mixed much of by myself for an indie label. I'm not just some kid in his bedroom with a Les Paul Special II and a Crate amp. Hopefully that gives me some credibility. Anyway..... I know how it is when people try and tell you how to write a song or how to arrange it when they have no context whatsoever. It's super annoying. When people say that to me I just nod my head and thank them for the suggestion without trying to sound too snotty.. Music is an art and should be created to fulfill your own needs first. If other people like it, great. Even if you create music with the purpose of other people enjoying, you must first enjoy it yourself. Leave little Stacy alone, she can write however she wants to write and Eisley and Rob will work together to find the best arrangements for each song. |

The keys aren't that prominent in the mix anyway when the rest of the band comes in. I think they're fine just how they are. Head Against the Sky is a good song. It has a nice edge to it that I like. Of course, I like songs like Marvelous Things and Memories as well. So I'm afraid I can't complain either way. How's that for a nice, happy, uncontroversial, "boring" post?

Outside opinions (especially from someone who knows the music) can be just as beneficial as a producer or artist's musical experience. A musician who doesn't at least consider the ideas and suggestions offered by his or her fans is, in my humble opinion, being foolish. Artistic integrity is great. Making music for yourself is great. I'm not trying to advocate catering to the lowest common denominator or anything.
