Looks like Midlake recently underwent some member changes, rebranding, and wrote an album in the three years since The Courage of Others.
What do you all think of the new song?
(Personally, I love love love it.)

There is a noticeable uptick in energy, but they still have that psychedelic folk-rock vibe going on, which I really dig.

Its fair to say they're pulling off a Genesis level switcharoo. I would have assumed from my exposure that Tim Smith was more musically involved that I would think Peter Gabriel was in early Genesis, but the talent of the band as a whole shines on this track. I will buy this record, and I'm fathoming that I will really enjoy it if they build from where this track is heading.

I also hope Tim Smith takes a break from his bird studies to record more music at some point.

Copied & pasted from the Album thread:

The whole Midlake thing is interesting. I get the feeling that Tim Smith is an extreme perfectionist, which can be both good and bad. He started his own project called Harp and he even admits it may be a long time before anything comes out. I think that may have hurt the last record and made it sound too "same-y" imo. I think it would be a good experiment for him if he recorded an album in a week or two with minimal overdubs to see how it turned out.

He left and then the rest of the band wrote and recorded a complete album in 6 months. It could be like Can. They had two eras of vocalists and then one of the rest of the band took over. And, of course, there's Genesis. I wouldn't know what the other Midlake guy's singing sounds like - not sure if he ever sang lead on the past records. They may become more instrumental and rely less on vocals. Either way, I will at least check it out.

It feels like a definite Genesis move, that will make Midlake a little more accessible/ livelier if you base it on that first track, and possibly more productive, but they might lose loyalists to Tim & fans of their mellower moods. But the whole album might be different than that track. Thing is, Genesis was just as esoteric and progressive for the first 3 albums after Peter Gabriel left and it wasn't until 5 years later when ABCAB came out that they got a touch of pop crossover, and even still they were on the fringe until Genesis (s/t) came out and they embraced a style closer to Phil Collins' successful solo stuff.

I definitely think Tim Smith's apparent obsession with perfection helped choke a good deal of life out of the previous album. And that the new stuff will likely be a reaction to that.

That said, I'm absolutely sad it happened, but still very much look forward to the new album.

And look even more forward to the hopeful reunion somewhere down the line.

I think Midlake is part of that concert thing in Denton. I went a couple years ago when The Flaming Lips headlined and it was amazing. Midlake played, this was after the last album came out, so it sounded all kinda same-y. On top of that, it was FREE!

Anyway, thinking about Midlake made me think of Ester Drang. Thanks to the new Facebook Pages situation, I totally missed that they are working on a new album.

I say all this to say - I wish there could be an annual concert thing for Denton/Dallas where Midlake and Eisley always perform. Then include The Lips if they're able. Ester Drang, Polyphonic Spree (who just put out a new album for the first time in years), Pilotdrift. All of these are from that area or Oklahoma. Quiet Company from Austin has East Texas ties. They would probably be up for it.

Denton has it's own collection of people to throw in the mix, and Dallas has a few other good ones, my personal favorites you didn't mention yet would be:

Sarah Jaffe
Centromatic/ South San Gabriel
St. Vincent

I also think Davíd Garza would be a great fit amongst those acts.

Big state with big cities yields big talents.

I forgot about St Vincent. I think she has lived in New York for many years now though.

The Velvet Blue Music label has a lot of Dallas ties.

I will forever hold onto that time I met St. Vincent and chatted with her for a minute after she opened for Midlake. We should have eloped.

Midlake just announced a couple of shows with Pearl Jam. Thoughts? Even though one of the dates is in my city, $80 is pretty steep for a ticket...

Hopefully it will expand their audience in a positive way. PJ is good for one or two memorabe sings an album at this point, but they're still great live and like to promote lesser known bands when they tour. Band of Horses opened when i saw them last time. This is definitely an upgrade for PJ.
