 Post subject: What's the true essence of "Eisley"?Posted: Thu Jul 02, 2009 4:05 am 
I've been thinking about this, and since Eisley is due to cough up a couple of years of songwriting maturity and personal growth for fresh ears, I'm wondering what people really think defines Eisley as a band. Is it green? Is it fantasy lyrics? The Rhodes? Or is it something deeper, or just is the fact that the band makes the music that makes the music "Eisley"? Personally, I think whatever Eisley does is Eisley. I think it's a little confining to say that their sometimes fantastical subject matter is at their core. Do they really have to start forcing that material out? I think whatever the band does will have their personalities stamped into it (at least as long as they have enough control to make it the way they want it), but I don't think it's necessarily anything to do with subject matter. the voices, without a doubt. The music has always been pretty free ranging in styles, and arrangements, from spare to robust, revved up to nocturne. But their voices are the single most recognizable thing about the band for me, and makes any song an Eisley song, or anyone who sounds anything like them at all vocally, elicit Eisley in my mind. _________________ yup, that's my name. To me, the unicorn barbie rock or whatever you want to call it is where it's at. I really enjoyed Room Noises, but Combinations started to sound too much like everything else out there, without anything distinguishing it lyrically. Eisley can do whatever they want, but I probably won't enjoy the next album if it's all about life experience instead of fantasy imagery. _________________ EisleyForever wrote: you're A-list in my heart! I think I'd use the word "imagination." My favorite Eisley songs are some of the more abstract ones. It's nice to have songs that aren't so literal, aren't so ostensibly autobiographical, where you can just close your eyes and see the words, and they don't always conjure the same images. Musically, I might use the word "unified." As a band, their instruments tend to coalesce to make a unified sound. This can be done badly, such as in late 90s pop music, where you couldn't tell what kind of instrument was playing what; or it can be done successfully, as in an orchestra. I don't want to seem hyperbolic, but they seem to at least be pointing to the latter. |

You guys put into words why the feelings I get when I hear the songs that were mentioned above (OTM, TES, IWP) are still strong, even after listening to them so many times. Simple/young or whatever, I love the emotion I feel either through the imagery or the music. Even as they advance and evolve in their music/style, I think/hope we will still find some of that imagery/"magical realism." Like in "If You're Wondering;" although it's not lyrically fanciful, it still gives that "wonderment of life" feeling (to me anyway). So, that is also the "essence" of Eisley to me. |

It's funny everyone seems to love RN these days considering that when the album came out damn near everyone tore it pieces. FLIP-FLOPPERS! I NAME YOU ALL! 
However, I'm inclined to agree with boone, Hannah, and Tyler (this is no conspiracy), the used of magic, either creepy or 'My Little Pony' gave something to the music that 'If You're Wondering' couldn't lyrically. Maybe it's because I got into them before Room Noises and Combinations, so songs like "Sea King", "Tree Tops", and "Over the Mountains" have a special place in my heart. _________________ Power is only pain It’s probably better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in. Eisley keeps me listening because of two things: 1. I enjoy hearing the growth in their girls' singing voices. They just keep getting better and better. 2. The songwriting is creative - lyrically, musically, instrumentally. I'm always interested in the harmonic structures and chord progressions they go for. What makes "Eisley" Eisley for me? .i think that as long as Stacy is a member "Eisley" will be Eisley for me. Truely. And sukieinthe_g said their vocals and imagination are key. Some long time ago boyd posted a video of My Lovely to the forum... and most of the forum complained that it sounded much different from their music. I thought that their label had made them change their music and I hated the label. And then after a few days the forum learned that Eisley really liked the song. We felt bad for making their process rough. So I learned that these real people could have different opinions from the ones born in my head. And the forum learned too, i guess, because it changed into a better forum! With more freedom! The band keeps growing. Now, there's a love in me for whatever music they make. It's from their experiences so far.
