I know most people don't sit and formulate this kind of stuff, they just live it. Me, I ended up coming with my own after sort-of being forced to in order to straightened out some crooked goings-ons in my life 11 years ago or so.

So what are your standards folks?

Mine are two simple ones: Discretion and Integrity. The combination results in basic human decency, at least I hope so.

Loyalty mostly, but also honesty, and respect for yourself (which may seem like it's none of my business, but when you're 'with' someone, out and about, kinda can become yours..)

I tend to be a bit too picky with friends Sad I rarely have any as I'm typing this. But, it's my own fault. I learn, I grow.. things will change. But, if I don't like someone, I don't like them. I truly disregard any bad vibes that flow in a friendship and kick 'em out tha friendship party door.

I have very lax entry level standards, but definitely have standards to maintain that friendship -- namely, respect.

I've "fired" several friends in the past after hanging onto poor friendships for far too long. I believe people do "poison" our lives, and we have to take out the trash.

I much prefer a life with few or no friends to one with poor friends. I've lived it, and I was much happier. And yeah, lots of new friends always come along, even if there are dry spells. Stay picky Kylee, it's for the best. You'll have plenty of friends, or at least the right amount. Smile

I really value following through on plans, keeping one's word. If someone bails more than a couple times, there's pretty much no saving that friendship in my eyes.

On the flipside, not wasting my time is important too. This girl made it seem like she needed to be picked up from the bars because her friend left her alone, but when I got there she wanted me to stay and have a drink. Really not cool. Stopped talking to her after that.

The hallmark of a friend, has always been to me, someone to whom you can say something to in confidence, and know that it will go no further.

That can mean so many things, but I think the obvious choice is the answer and to that I say Shocked Embarassed maybe even QFT Confused

I don't have any real standards for friends.
Sometimes, though, I get "bad vibes" from people, and I can't be their friend, which is a bit mean.
In my defense, my "bad vibes" are usually correct.

i have a long list of standards. it basically goes like this

Fitter, happier, more productive,
comfortable,
not drinking too much,
regular exercise at the gym
(3 days a week),
getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries ,
at ease,
eating well
(no more microwave dinners and saturated fats),
a patient better driver,
a safer car
(baby smiling in back seat),
sleeping well
(no bad dreams),
no paranoia,
careful to all animals
(never washing spiders down the plughole),
keep in contact with old friends
(enjoy a drink now and then),
will frequently check credit at
(moral) bank (hole in the wall),
favors for favors,
fond but not in love,
charity standing orders,
on Sundays ring road supermarket
(no killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants),
car wash
(also on Sundays),
no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows
nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate,
nothing so childish - at a better pace,
slower and more calculated,
no chance of escape,
now self-employed,
concerned (but powerless),
an empowered and informed member of society
(pragmatism not idealism),
will not cry in public,
less chance of illness,
tires that grip in the wet
(shot of baby strapped in back seat),
a good memory,
still cries at a good film,
still kisses with saliva,
no longer empty and frantic
like a cat
tied to a stick,
that's driven into
frozen winter $#@!
(the ability to laugh at weakness),
calm,
fitter,
healthier and more productive
a pig
in a cage
on antibiotics.

I can say some pretty insulting things in jest (the LC community collectively gasps in disbelief!) so my main standard for friendship is a good sense of humor. If people get easily offended over stupid, petty crap, I will distance myself from them.

As a general rule though, I try to be cordial to everyone I know in person, even if they're just acquaintances and haven't yet reached that level of emotional attachment I apply to friends.

I thought of a standard:
Can handle a real conversation.

Sometimes, when somebody is doing something that bothers me, I want to talk about it. Half of the people appreciate my candor, the other half get super butt-hurt and defensive.

I figure: I'd rather lose a friend because they're a big baby that can't handle my "realness", than lose a friend because I never made the effort to try and make it work. Slowly dying friendships are awkward and sucky.

If a person speaks like they text*... ciao.

*"el oh el, Oh em gee, Double you tea eff" ugh
