So, for my AP English class, I have to write a paper about a song and talk about what it means and how I know what it means from the text and rhetorical devices. I picked memories because of it's imagery, story, and tone. Personally, I interpreted it as a women who lost her husband reminiscing about him and how looking and tending to his garden is her way of remembering him. Also, that even though he is gone beautiful things still exist and that she should appreciate it. But, that's just what I interpreted. I loved AP English. My highschool English courses were what pushed me over the edge to decide to go into Literature as a profession (teaching college, eventually). I'm working on a book right now with a friend (of poetry and short stories) and I was just thinking today about actually doing short stories for Room Noises again now that I'm more confident in my creativity and writing/ideas. That little story isn't necessarily TOO helpful for what you need in a poetry/song literary analysis, but I'm hoping it gives you some insight. Personal creative adaptations and literal, straight-forward literary analysis are two way different things, but whatev! We are pretty much on the same page with how we "see" the lyrics' meanings. _________________ Previously user holland, 2005. I think the dead husband is kind of speaking to the widow through the gardening activities that they used to enjoy together, metaphorically of course. Or it could be that her planting the seeds that her husband used to enjoy planting has reminded her of the beautiful things they shared together. Funny he is weeping early in the song, yet I am certain it is really her weeping as he is dead and all this is a memory. I think when the video for this song has Sherri turn into Stacy (or was it the other way around), it is similar to how 2 people become one in a marriage. Not literally, but spiritually for sure. It is amazing how young they were when this song was written. |

And you are right about the biblical and literal two becoming one: it's the emotional connection of spouses, and literally: children. hip hop slang and biblical terminology for the male contribution to the spark of life: seed.
