I sympathize to some degree- this is cogent and inciteful;
But it assumes that you collect or retain nothing from the changes you transit as you go through life- are affected and changed by nothing- and that's not growth. The changes you go through do change you or affect you- you do carry things forward from them, or what was the point.

It doesn't mean you stagnate in them. you collect artifacts, psychological, spiritual and physical from where and who you've been. To me there is also a kind of stagnation in anxiously resisting full commitment to your identity or circumstance at a given point in time for fear that it might blemish you or change you in some way.

The tattoo on my shoulder is a bit like the surgical scars on my knee and hand, or my bum ac joint, or the diplomas on my bottom bookshelf, or the DD214 in the back of my file cabinet, or the things I've learned from people I've known and the joys and tragedies I've shared with them - none of them are really where I am now anymore- they're all artifacts of things I've been and done in prior stages and phases- most of which I wouldn't do again now and not all of which were necessarily healthy but none of which I'll ever let myself really regret or seek to disown.

I guess my point is that one can worry too much about future regrets about things like tattoos (and less concrete but analogous kinds of commitments). If its not really where you are, in identity or tastes or social circumstances, you shouldn't do it! But if it is, I don't know if the fact that it won't always be should necessarily be put you off. It might not be where or who you are at some future point, but it will be an artifact of where or who you've really been. I don't think that's unhealthy

NONE of that repudiates any of the advice I've posted in the past about thinking hard about if its really something you want though- the permanence is something to take seriously. I just don't think its something to fear.

^Keep in mind you're replying to a High School Senior (not that makes Cendrillion's opinion less valid). But I know in High School I didn't even feel like I made one adult decision, I just did what I did, and most of what I was supposed to do, with minimal thought past "What am I gonna in the summer?"

Even when I was pressured to Get a job, Go away to school, or move out, I made my choice in a haphazard, see no further than my nose, kind of way. Part of being young is not having a strong desire to see much further past your youth until it's obvious in decline.

She's 26, she probably put enough thought into it. A good friend of mine dreamed of many tattoos for years, waited until she was 25 and then suddenly got a lot of ink. People ask her the old "what-about-when-you're-a-senior-citizen" question, and she just replies that she'll be in good company. So many people have prominently placed tattoos nowadays that it no longer seems "rock", "rawk" or even that subculture-ish. Unless something is poorly done, misspelled, or really gory or porny, I barely look twice.

^Oh, if you're invoking the age and thought thing in response to my post, I was just bringing up age in response to Inorbit's post because it was in response to Cendrillion's post about why she wouldn't get a tattoo. My post had nothing to do with Sherri's decision at all.

Right, there's definitely a balance between acting on every impulse and being afraid to try new things out of fear. And I'm all for growing and learning, especially from mistakes. I guess it comes down to individual personalities. Some people who changed their mind later about a ten inch tattoo would be fine with it, and wear it as a badge of honor. Some people would be horrified. Some people would never change their minds.

Anyway, getting a tattoo may seem like something Sherri had to do right now to grow and express herself and her identity. But at one point rocking a faux-hawk did, too. Thank god that wasn't permanent.

It kinda reminds me of the commissioned drawing of herself she did for me (see Avatar!)

I love that picture and I love that tattoo! It's 100% Sherri! Very Happy

what? the faux-hawk was $#@! hot — and so is this tattoo! although, it's insanely weird to get a tattoo of yourself (or someone who looks remarkably like a cartoon version of yourself, at least), i'm more than capable of digging some “insanely weird” $#@!, and i dig this! heck, i'd like to see Sherri get more tattoos…

Haha, well don't get me wrong. I think Sherri's up there with Linda Evangelista as one of the few people who can do pretty much anything with her hair and still look absolutely beautiful. Not to mention it's how thoughtful, uniquely creative, and expressive she seems that helps make her so fascinating.

But, in my opinion, none of that makes faux-hawks cool. Smile

I'm beyond sad to be missing his solo run with Keane and Ingrid Michaelson.

Very Happy

I Love Travis.

and that was around The Man Who, so it was maybe 11 years ago (US release). Such endearing music. And they can still rock when they want to (Ode to J. Smith being evidence to the 10th power)

I <3 Travis as well. I enjoy a good faux hawk once in a while.

In regards to Wil and inorbit's posts, I guess they're both sort of right.
I hadn't thought that much about inorbit's view. But I am a hoarder of memories....just not really on my body. If it's something unintentional like a scar, that's different (also, I don't actually have any scars I can find, weird as that is). But yeah, I am young, and I know teenagers do stupid stuff. I don't want to be a stupid teenager. I don't think I'm fully aware of my whole identity at this point, and I'm okay with that. But I don't want to have to look at my arm for the rest of my life and be reminded of a certain time. I'd rather page through my old journals, at my leisure.

For Wil (and this is getting off track, I'm sorry) I guess it feels like I've spent my whole life looking past the end of my nose. Anticipating some better, future event. But now, at the present moment, where I'm happy with the choice I made for college, and I'm graduating high school today, I'm content to pull back and enjoy the moment. For like, the first time in my life.
