My friend the other day told me he thinks Eisley reminds him of "Chamber-pop" or "Baroque Pop": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baroque_pop

I think the description kind of fits..I never knew there was a term for it ha.

I agree, actually. We finally have a genre to tell people when they ask what type of music Eisley is! This is a glorious day.

Haha. I didn't say it'd make sense to them, I just said we now have a genre to file them under. And if all else fails, just tell them to look it up. Wink

If they're asking specifically after a band's genre, they're probably familiar with some obscure genres or else they'd just say "What do they sound like?" (Which is, incidentally, a much better question to ask as you're less likely to get a useless, nebulous umbrella answer like "Um, alt-rock?")

Chamber pop is a pretty great description, but I've always preferred carousel rock. Very Happy

I think "what do you like about them?" is a much better question to ask when inquiring about a band.

When I think of baroque pop (the term I prefer), I think of harpsichords, accordions, lots of reverb, etc. The kind of 60s Motown/Phil Spector/Beach Boys/Zombies/British Invasion sound. Eisley may not fit completely into that, but I think the term works.

Baroque Pop (at least late Baroque) could be described as music in the galant style. Wink

The band I think of when I hear the description baroque pop is Magnetic Fields, and to a lesser extent Dead Can Dance. I like the term but don't think it quite fits Eisley.

Carousel rock FTW. Smile

Baroque pop, et al, are terms from the late 60s to describe the synthesis of the kind of soul pop music at the time with lush, complex instrumentation and studio innovation. Modern groups fitting into that group would be, like, Camera Obscura, Dr. Dog, Sufjan Stevens, She & Him; and I wouldn't be afraid to say groups like Radiohead and Neutral Milk Hotel, either.

Uhmm... Well, when i see "Chamber Pop" I always think of Belle & Sebastian, Rufus Wainwright, and lately Regina Spektor amongst others.

There are some Eisley songs that fit that (mostly earlier stuff though) which is being outnumbered by the material that has followed, whether you like it or not. Use the term at your own peril...

And it's funny how artists who are sounding more and more like Early Genesis and Yes, who were without a doubt Progressive Rock (before they went Arena, they were all over European folk music and Baroque) are "Indie Rock" or "Freak Folk" bands now, amongst other labels getting thrown around. Don't believe me, listen to ANY Genesis record before And Then There Were Three. Or Yes Record before Tales From the Topographic Oceans. The super-technical stuff that does get called Proggy (Coheed & Cambria, Mars Volta, Circa Survive etc) is an extreme and isn't really much like the early Progressive stuff. It was more pastoral.

Way to go Willie, I never completed that thought

Speaking of prog rock, Sufjan Stevens' All Delighted People, for some reason, makes me think of Jethro Tull's Aqualung. I think it's the track order.

What do you think of All Delighted People and The Age of Adz?

The title track in the former is unbelievable, but the latter as a whole has really grown on me. "All For Myself", "Vesuvius", and "Impossible Soul" are highlights for me.
