Bigideas: I saw a few minutes of the Garbage Pail Kids movie. It was just odd. Maninthemoon: SPOILER ALERT: In Man of Steel, there technically isn't any Kryptonite. Boone: That all rings true to me. So... would Lolita (Kubrick), Eyes Wide Shut, The Game (Michael Douglas), in terms of plots, qualify as Film Noir? How about Brick? _________________ yup, that's my name. Thinking about all of this reminded me of Garbage Pail Kids. I'm pretty sure my mom hated it, but I think I got a few packs of them. The GPK movie is one of those that I'm not sure if I only saw the trailer, or actually saw the complete movie. The trailer makes it look completely stupid, but I kinda want to see it. The Garbage Pail Kids Movie was at times horrifying but generally dull and stupid. It's kind of the long form version of a rejected Punky Brewster episode, but Henry Warnimont is a magician, Punky Brewster is a boring male kid, and Cherie Johnson is a handful of stupid, inarticulate demon turd people with brachycephaly. There's a good chunk of Mr. Plinkett's Avatar review dedicated to it: http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/other-movies/avatar/ _________________ Scriptozoology, a screenwriting blog .. Facebook |

It's a bit of a stretch, but I think those movies have some qualities that bring it pretty close to noir. There's kind of an established parallel subgenre that they fit into though, kind of a "descent" film. Discovering the underbelly. Movies like Hardcore and 8mm are similar, but with probably even stronger film noir qualities. Brick certainly has some hallmarks of film noir, but is definitely more influenced by the detective novels of Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler, and the hardboiled detective stories of pulp magazines. Kind of "proto-noir," I guess you could say. But the naivete of the main character pushes it more into film noir. _________________ Scriptozoology, a screenwriting blog .. Facebook |

The Shadow The Phantom Darkman I enjoyed The Phantom quite a lot, it's a fun update of an old superhero and doesn't take itself very seriously, which is how a movie starring a guy running around in a skintight purple bodysuit ought to be. Kristy Swanson is gorgeous, and for a bit of trivia she said the scenes of her mansion were shot at the Playboy mansion as Hugh Hefner was a fan of the Phantom and allowed permission for the first time to any outside movie crew. Best if all though is Treat Williams as megalomaniacal bad guy. If you liked The Rocketeer this has a similar feel. I remember liking The Shadow more than I expected but details about the movie haven't stuck with me. Never seen Darkman. Got the be better than Raimi's Spider-Mans. _________________ http://www.twitter.com/drstrangeblog http://www.last.fm/user/getinline I can't find the time to write my mind the way I want it to read. |

So, I have had my suspicions about where Nolan would take this series of films, given he only signed on to be involved after he felt he had a Superman story he wanted to tell. With Snyder being a cinematic advocate for all things DC it's only fitting that he do another Frank Miller arch... so yeah... I am looking forward to Dawn of Justice. https://youtu.be/IwfUnkBfdZ4 _________________ yup, that's my name. FOR YOUR RATING PLEASURE: 4 LIKE Buttons, 1 NEUTRAL, 1 VEXED, 5 DISLIKE buttons. I think it will be limited to that particular costume, but honestly, I prefer it the Bale voice and Keaton voice, which both were pretty ridiculous. Like Batman should be in Slipknot. _________________ yup, that's my name. FOR YOUR RATING PLEASURE: 4 LIKE Buttons, 1 NEUTRAL, 1 VEXED, 5 DISLIKE buttons.
