Stacy picks up a guitar more and more often, so them playing other instruments is far from a new thing. It's much more likely a product of comfort and musical growth than an actual necessity. (Sherri is rumored to be able to play drums, also.)

The biggest deterrent from switching instruments when you can play more than one, is the presence of someone else who can play that instrument as well, if not better, so you can be freed up to play another instrument and go all out. Being in a band with good musicians you have chemistry with is fare more rewarding and exciting than playing everything yourself. It literally gives you such a rush it changes your body chemistry and personality.

Sherri has always struck me as the "Leader" of the band, and with her being a principle songwriter and vocalist she has had the luxury of very talented bandmates to lean on to bring her ideas to life. Then she married another talented songwriter and arranger who sings and plays guitar so in her case the only reason she would ever have to switch is because she wanted to. That's a luxury. Few musicians have a chance to choose if they will either specialize in one thing or be a jack of all trades, let alone attempt both.

Add to that the opportunity to learn from others who have the skills you may be weak on when you are stuck, and it's musical heaven. I believe that is why they have continued to grow and evolve as a band and songwriters with such success. Their environment is fertile ground for that kind of development.

Sherri has always (since Eisley began) played keys, right?
All those early demos were done on a Fun Time Organ - unless Stacy was accompanying every one (I would say she probably wasn't).
The first thing I think of is I Wasn't Prepared being a Sherri song mostly piano based. Whether or not she wrote it on piano, I don't know.

Yup. I remember reading somewhere that she said she writes everything on guitar and piano and then let's stacy and chauntelle figure it out.

Also around the valley recording cycle I remember her saying she writes most of her songs on a keyboard.
