OK, guys, you dont have to listen to me, or my oh-so-humble opinion, but let me express some ideas to you about "selling out". And by you, I mean you MOSSEISLEY folks, not those of you who aren't in the positon to have to make this kind of decision. First of all, I would like you to know that I am a musician as well, and have been faced with this decision myself. Upon entering the "scene" I had no real intentions of "making it" and in all honesty I shunned the idea because of "sell out" ideas like these.
But let's look at what we're talking about here. Let's analyze what "selling out" actually means. If you are doing what you love (and you are, I can tell, I have been around the block a few times) and you are not compromising yourself or especially, your self respect in order to gain something (fame, money, whatever) then all you are doing is what any respectable musician SHOULD do, which is, putting yourself, and your music in a place and position where it can serve it's purpose. Ask yourself, are you making music so you and those who are close enough to have access to you can hear it, or are you making music because at some point in your life you were touched by it and wanted to touch people the same way, or is it because you feel, in the depths of your heart, that you "have to" like there is some driving force beyond your control, a pupeteer, if you will, or, is it something else... i know you know... i am guessing you have asked yourself this question before. This is not for the sake of mere philosopy, it will help you answer you own questions about the risks of "selling out". And keep in mind, that moving forward in your career as musicians does not equate to "selling out". But, I might think, that not taking opportunities to grow and move forward as musicians because someone thinks you are supposed to be their band and their band only would be "selling out" AND "selling yourself short". It doesn't matter, I repeat, IT DOESN'T MATTER what busineess decisions you make as a band; as long as you are true to each other, yourselves, and your fans, you will never, ever, ever be a "sell out". No matter how much money you make, how many times you tour the world, how many radio stations play your songs, how many commercials use your music (which you have a choice to let them or not by the way - just read your contracts carefully and try as hard as you can to retain ALL publishing rights within your contract) you are not "selling out". Selling out is when you are doing something that you hate or that goes against your virtues in order to gain something that you can't take withyou anyway, if you know what I mean.
Don't be afraid of the road ahead. Especially, don't be afraid of critisism, there will ALWAYS be critics. Just take your time, choose your business realtionships wisely and after careful and lengthy consideration. And when you feel sure about it, go for it... and don't look back. All those folks calling you a "sell out" are selling out everyday at their corporate jobs that they hate, not being true to themselves, not taking the risk of following their dreams the way you have done. Signing a record deal IS NOT selling out... not signing a record deal if you feel in your heart that it is the best way to get you music to the people, then you are a sell out, and you should seriously reconsider why you even started making music in the first place. It isn't about being cool... it is about feeling, and allowing others to feel, sharing, and expressing, ... oh i have rambled long enough, and i must leave now as to make it to the mosseisley show on time...
