Lewis. Yes, yes. But comparing the two... Lewis had such a broad range, both fiction and non-fiction, and everything done well. I think that is why I love him just a little bit more. But Tolkien had a better hand with the creation of characters in my opinion. His stories were just as fantastical as Lewis' but there was an greater element of reality that made his novels more relate-able. |

C.S. Lewis. He's my favorite author of all time. I like his fantasy books(Space Triology and Chronicles of Narnia) more than the LOTR because Lewis's are more light and enjoyable, but Toilkien's seem to get to heavy and drag at places. I mean, the Space Triology was very heavy, but it still, in a way seemed lighter. I love Tolkien too, just not quite as much. |

Tolkien. No contest at all. Tolkien is the reason for it all. I doubt the Chronicles of Narnia would have ever been written if Lewis had not met Tolkien. Narnia is a work saturated with Christian symbolism, and Lewis was an Atheist until he had joined up with the Inklings and met Tolkien, a devout Catholic. As for the story, there is no comparison to Lord of the Rings. Arda has been created and described in such amazing detail that is it just as real as our own world. Pick any given time and given place in Arda, and Tolkien most likely wrote exactly what was happening then. The characters are absolutley fantastic, the story is as epic and dramatic as they get without being melodramatic. When you really take the time to read Lord of the Rings, you get immersed in the story. I tear up when I read it even now, when the White Rider appears with the Mark to win Helm's Deep, or when the Horns of the North signal the arrival of the Rohirrim to aid the desperate defenders of Minas Tirith (my absolute favorite part). Even after 3 read throughs, I still get chills when Gandalf fights Durin's Bane, or when Frodo volunteer to take the One Ring. Then there are so many other stories. The Silmarillion (Fingolfin fights Morgoth, I love it), The Lost Tales, Adventures of Tom Bombadil, Christopher Tolkien's fantastic History of Middle-Earth books...it really never ends. Middle-Earth is just about my second home, so Tolkien get's 120% of my vote. _________________ Audioscrobbler Now

Once I teared up when I read "The Magician's Nephew"! I think they are both excellent in their own ways, I just enjoy reading Lewis's stuff more. And, if you think the LOTR's are extremely complicated writing, you should read the Space Triology and see all the effort that went it to writing those. Remember, "The Chronicles of Narnia" were kids books. I wouldn't compare LOTR to a book written specifically for children. Read the Space Triology. |

When I started this thread I was thinking" Not long before Paranoid Android comes and starts raving about Tolkien....AGAIN! You're such a die hard fan.. it's funny. I just love fairy tales that's why I love Narnia. THE ANIMALS TALK!!!! No really, I admire both authors VERY much. _________________ La la la la dum dee dum dum |
