What did you guys think of the shows? I guess seeing all 3 gave me perspective, but...I've heard people saying that CP had some big problems on this tour. Here's my candid take:

Houston was flawless as I remember it. Those Houstonians are so cool...a vapid crowd; even for Moss whom they'd never seen or heard of - the singing on Coldplay songs was deafening. 3000 sold out enthusiasts. Very fun.

Both Austin and Dallas shows had rebounding recoveries – but there were problems: In Austin, the guitar tech strapped a 12 string around Chris’s neck with the low E so far out of tune, you’d have to be tone deaf not to have scowled. (visions of frustrated Chris...looking to the side while trying to continue his leprechanic ballet - pointing....sign language...again and again, but they did nothing) then about 3/4’s through the set, his electric guitar “broke”. I don't know how bad it all was, but the audience felt it. The cool thing was - he just took the crappy situation and turned it around...making light of his predicament; it turned out great. I'm not sure if the Austin crowd quite "got" the band as much as Houston and Dallas. I was told it might be because they get so much music there....none of the acts were as well received as the other markets. hmmm...not sure. A peep from the scene there told me that Austin was saturated and there were many music snobs. I choose not to believe that...still, they were sorta ho-hum.

In Dallas, his (Chris) "in-ear" went out and he couldn’t hear for the first 1/4 of the set (you wouldn't have known...I didn't hear him miss a note), he finally jerked it out and apologized... I guess they fixed it. I had the sense they’d had some pre-show relational issues but that's just a guess; also, they did no sound check so Chris could save his voice - so that probably didn't help any.(he stressed it at Austin on Wed. so he was trying not to use it at all) Anyway, you could feel that something wasn't right....the show wasn't really gaining momentum like I'd seen it before. I kept waiting for them to shift gears. Finally it happened. Mr. Martin latched onto his own lyrics: “everything’s not lost” and made it his own....He spoke humbly about themselves as a "sloppy British band" in between phrases...and added touches of humor here and there - changing words to "and when you think that Texas hates you"....etc. It loosened everybody up...and made us endear him. Humility does that. (these guys are so humble...you can't imagine)

But anyway....the "recovery" created this amazing dynamic that seemed WAY better than if they’d never had any trouble. (no pun) omg - the release of hope, joy and energy from what I might call a rebound rose to the top of the rafters and blew out the doom from the room of enthusiastic onlookers – creating this euphor-epic (i made that up), cathartic finale'. We were all dazzled with a solid battering of light, sound and emotion. I pity the fools that didn't get to go....truly a world act. I totally believe these guys will take their seats with the other great British patrons of Rock and Roll – The Beatles, Pink Floyd, U2, RadioHead. (just to name my few favorites)

Well, that's a bit of very hack writing, but...you get the idea. bd

I thought they were GREAT.
Chris has a very good live voice and a great stage presence. My only complaint is that the snare drum was a little out of balance, it was really loud at times and so quiet at times that I could barely hear it, ...and sometimes it was perfect. Also, they didn't play "Shiver" which is one of my favorite Coldplay tunes, I was disappointed.
Overall, a very spectacular performance. I was suprised at how well they pulled of some of the songs being that many of the studio tracks are heavily layered with multiple guitars. They did a very good job though. The guitar tones sounded warm and fuzzy which I love, often guitars sound too bright at live shows, but the guitarists obviously knows about how to control his tone. I love Chris' personality. He really seems to relate to the audience very well.

Coldplay is one of the best bands out there right now.

Thanks for bringing back the memories Boyd. That was very detailed and well put with the whole bouncing back from the technical problems. I went to the Austin and Dallas shows and they were simply phenomenal in my buyest opinion (Coldplay is my favorite band by far.) I will have to say that the Dallas show blew the Austin show away. The crowd was a lot more in to it even though we were seated and Chris seemed to be a lot more like himself (funny, fidgety, excited, and just happy to be performing) towards the end than he was at the Austin show. I really enjoy seeing bands having technical problems because it let's you see the band as reglar people that make mistakes rather than just flawless performers. Other things also happened at the Dallas show that didn't happen in Austin. For one thing, you could see Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki standing together, watching the show backstage on the right side(facing the stage). Another amazing thing that I thought was really nice was when Gwyneth Paltrow(Chris' girlfriend) stood, with her arms crossed, watching the encore. Chris apparently wrote the last song, "Ladder to the Sun"(the best song ever, hence my quote) about Gwyneth and I know this is sappy and everything and yes I am a straight male with a girlfriend who happened to be there with me, but I couldn't help but think that he was kind of singing to her as she stood there. I know, boooo!! cheesy!! While I am at this point I might as well go ahead and confess that I thought Sleepless In Seattle was a great movie. Anywho, we all thought that it was the most amazing thing we had ever seen and I think that coldplay is incapable of making a bad song. Like I mentioned before, kind of a buyest opinion.

Haha, I'm such an idiot. Oh gosh...biased, biased, biased, biased, biased. Well, I will probably remember how to spell 'biased' for the rest of my life because of this incident...that is how you spell incident isn't it? Sorry, and thanks.

I'm all about getting in touch with my feminine side....which ever side that is...or if I even have one. But, yeah, the show was amazing. I never introduced myself to Gwenivier. I just figured she was royalty....a hollywood figurine - I didn't want to invade her space with my own self-indulgence. I tried to stay out of the Coldplay guys way too - but, they were eager to talk...especially by the last night and especially Will. Johnny was super friendly....Chris is a rock star, but very humble, lots of smiles. The last night, Kevin Westenberg set up lights and all for a photo-op with Moss and Coldplay together. That was nice - those guys didn't have to do that...lots of clowning around and joking. I have it on videotape. Anyway, during the week, I mostly worked within my role and learned from "Rock" - the Nettwerk provided tour manager. I left the CP guys alone. Are you kidding? I worked on bonding with the road crew, sound guy, monitor guy, light guy and tour manager. That's where it pays off. heh-heh- you win them over and you've got the rock stars in the palm of your hand. j.k.

Since, I had never been to a world-known band's concert before, I have no perspective to rely on; I had a great time at Coldplay's show in Austin. They are my favorite band! Before the second lp came out, I had aquired about 8 different Coldplay cds (including an unopened cd with just two tracks, both named "trouble" - was sent to radio stations). Sorry, I guess im an addict. Obviously, my opinion is biased, but they rocked; and I also think that the stage mistakes elevated the preformance even higher.

The whole low E string out of wack surpassed me.. I guess I'm tone deaf. Crying or Very sad After, reading boyd's review of dallas.. i wish i had been there. It would have been cool to see the guys clowing around up on stage.

And as for the weak Austin crowd: I've been to sixth street and seen a few preformances. At Emos, one of the more known clubs in Austin, I saw Thursday, Cursive, and others one night. The crowd seemed to enjoy the music but just stood there and took it all in. That's how it pretty much is at the concerts in Austin (from what I've experienced). People sit/stand and absorb the music, the feeling, and the uniqueness of the band on stage. Yea, some people will yell and lots of clapping can be heard between songs.. but during songs it tones down; i guess so everyone can hear the music.. hear every note. There is a lot of live music here.. maybe too much? Razz. For crying out loud, there's an "Austin Music Network" tv channel that only plays video of live preformances and local band's music videos. A lot of these music videos.. are well.. out there.. odd. Well, that's my take on Austin's live music atmosphere after being here a year for college.

Boyd's right ,a friend of mine has a similar "strategy", he's in music and used to do sound for Bleach, so at concerts he'll just start talking to the sound crew, ask them how much power they're running, etc. They get talking, and later on he can probably get backstage. Not that that is his goal, but it happens. That's what happened at a Chevelle show when I was with him, it was funny (and cool) - got to meet the Chevelle guys, real swell guys.
