AOL posted this article. They also had a poll and 53% of the people said they weren't thinking about buying a PS3 and 64% said that this problem will affect their decision to buy one. Sony had billed PlayStation 3 as being compatible with the previous PlayStation machines. But Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Satoshi Fukuoka said some of the 8,000 older games weren't working properly on PS3, making the wrong sounds or images, and some couldn't be played at all. He declined to give a number for the games that weren't functioning, but he said the same problem is expected when the game console goes on sale in the U.S. Nov. 17. About 16,000 different games have been sold for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in North America. The PS2 had similar problems with playing PS1 games. About 95% of my games working perfectly though. I imagine it's about the same with the PS3. Unlike the PS2 though, the PS3 has a harddrive so you'll be able to download patches as they start to come out from developers and homebrewers. The Wii backwards compatiability may be 100% for GCN, but you can't play any of your N64, SNES, or NES games on the Wii. You can redownload them onto the wii (5-8 bucks a game, depending on what it is), but there is currently no way to get your saves off the cartridges and onto the wii. Plus, Nintendo is only offering a small number of titles for digital distribution on launch day (a pretty lame list as well, I want me some Star Ocean!). They plan to add at least 10 games a month to the service. I'd much rather play a game with some bugs in it than pay 8 bucks to play a game I already own, without being able to keep any of my old games or scores. As someone who is reviled by videogames (yes, I mean videogames hate me), I think the Wii looks kinda fun. I might actually have to try it ... agreed (not for me...I am a gamer) I see the wii as a great opportunity for non gamers to get into the gaming community. in fact I was reading the Economist's article on how that is nintendo's game plan. Lots of short and sweet games for the casual gamers to take up that are simple and fun. It sounds good to me. |
