i listened straight through Machina on headphones while at work yesterday.
all the songs are good, but it's just so long.
a good deal of the first 2/3rds is kinda "same-y."
i wish he'd do like Kevin Barnes/Of Montreal and make a solid 40 min or so album and then include an EP of the other tracks as a bonus disc or make it available the same day.

i found Zwan used at hasting's for $5.99 (there were 3 copies) and this was even the CD/DVD copy. funny, the older pumpkins albums are still 8.99 or more i think.

i got around to watching the Zwan DVD - it is very weird that the majority of the songs featured on that are not even on the album.

does anyone know the reason they did this - was it supposed to be a preview of their next album?

one song had a sparse almost Sigur Ros quality to it. i'd really like to hear a full version of it. looking at the DVD listing it may be called A New Poetry.
did Billy release this is any other form?

I think the main thing is that Billy is a very prolific songwriter, so by the time the Zwan album came out, he had already come up with another album's worth of material. I saw them live, and it was a great show.

yeah. from what i've read he had already talked about the follow up and that they had also toured in different incarnations - one more acoustic, one more Pumpkins-esque.

it is pretty weird to have a DVD not showing hardly any songs on the actual album it's accompanying. i'm glad they did though. maybe that is what the next Zwan album would have sounded like.

the other day i came across a site that had tons of downloads with demos for a few of the albums, that mashed potatoes thing someone talked about here and other stuff.

Grab it, you're sure to enjoy it, pretty much all studio/soundboard/FM quality. If you don't know the history, the songs come from a CD set that Billy made in 1994 for the band and a couple friends, and one of the sets got stolen (said to be D'arcy's). The thief sold it to a local record store owner, asking for $500 but accepting $50 - apparently the owner wasn't willing to pay much for "a bunch of home recordings." Someone bought the discs soon afterwards, started circulating them and that's the source that exists today.

Zwan (pseudo-officially) released a bootleg called the hideout compilation that has a soundboard recording of a new poetry... It may even be the same one from the DVD, I can't recall for sure.

Supposedly it exists; unfortunately the SP hub didn't allow sharing some of that material. There are full live versions all over the web (archive.org, true poets of zwan fansite, etc...), but nothing soundboard quality. If you ever find a copy let me know, I've been looking for years.

No, it's not. In fact, that website is a fairly new venture. The hub was a filesharing network run through applications such as DC++ where a lot of fans shared live shows and rare releases. I haven't logged in there for awhile because they started becoming really strict (Lossless only, Pumpkins only) about what could be shared following the RIAA lawsuits; it may not exist anymore. Ditto to other SP fan resources. On the other hand the smashing pumpkins audio archive is back up in the form of rspaa.org, which you might enjoy checking out.

A New Poetry was the song i was looking for.
that recording is in need of compression or normalization (not sure of the right term) really badly.
there are a lot of spikes in the audio, especially on the vocals.

but really, that should have been the last track of the album if it was written before Mary came out.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/145884-smashing-pumpkins-re veal-20th-anniversary-tour

As promised, Billy Corgan and his Smashing Pumpkins will ThePastEmbrace on an extensive "20th Anniversary Tour", set to kick off November 1 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The month-long jaunt includes several two-night stands in larger North American cities, plus a four-night run in the Pumpkins' home base of Chicago. About damn time, you guys! Fans who hit up both nights in a given city are promised two completely different sets, and the Pumpkins have even come up with totally hokey names for these alternating sets: "Black Sunshine" and "White Crosses". Black5un5h1ne is so my new AIM screen name.

For each of the cities with just one Pumpkins anniversary gig, the band "plan[s] to deliver a unique one-off set," according to a press release.

As previously reported, the Pumpkins are also embracing both the future, with new song "G.L.O.W." set to debut in an add-on pack for the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour video game, and the recent past, with that DVD chronicling the band's reunion residencies due November 11.

Back here in the present, the group has a gig at Neil and Pegi Young's Bridge School Benefit on October 26, and a performance of "G.L.O.W." on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" scheduled for October 24.

SP:

10-26 Mountain View, CA - Shoreline Amphitheatre (Bridge School Benefit)
11-01 Cleveland, OH - Palace Theatre
11-03 Toronto, Ontario - Massey Hall ("Black Sunshine")
11-04 Toronto, Ontario - Massey Hall ("White Crosses")
11-06 New York, NY - United Palace Theatre ("Black Sunshine")
11-07 New York, NY - United Palace Theatre ("White Crosses")
11-08 Atlantic City, NJ - Borgata
11-11 Washington, DC - DAR Constitution Hall ("Black Sunshine")
11-12 Washington, DC - DAR Constitution Hall ("White Crosses")
11-14 Boston, MA - Wang Center ("Black Sunshine")
11-15 Boston, MA - Wang Center ("White Crosses")
11-16 Uncasville, CT - Mohegan Sun Arena
11-18 Chicago, IL - Chicago Theatre ("Black Sunshine")
11-19 Chicago, IL - Chicago Theatre ("White Crosses")
11-21 Chicago, IL - Auditorium Theatre ("Black Sunshine")
11-22 Chicago, IL - Auditorium Theatre ("White Crosses")
11-26 St. Louis, MO - Fox Theatre
11-30 San Diego, CA - RIMAC Arena
12-02 Los Angeles, CA - Gibson Amphitheatre ("Black Sunshine")
12-03 Los Angeles, CA - Gibson Amphitheatre ("White Crosses")

btw - has anyone heard GLOW yet? from what i understand it's only through a video game, right?

There is supposed to be a physical release at some time in the future, although it may only be an international release, however it debuts as a song on the game. There are recordings of the band playing it live floating around.
