I showed my daughter this video of George Michael and his bassist Deon Estus (who was an amazing vocalist too!!!!), and her comment was, "I wish I lived in the 1980s, because you could go to cool concerts." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnBdVdIppNU&list=LL&index=4

It's been a minute, but I do still check here occasionally! The Internet has changed since 2008 (when I first joined here). Smile Are you active anywhere else? Twitter, Tiktok, whatever? I miss having good conversations like this.

I still use Twitter & threads to keep up with a few people and interests. Most of my musical dialogue was in private groups with friends on facebook, but now we mostly just share memes and the occasionally article.

Last year a friend introduced a bunch of us to a free music "fantasy league " app where we all build playlists together based on the member admin'ing the game's theme choices. You can comment on your selection to introduce it or give it context, and comment on your votes for the others, along with a built in chat. It's been my primary source music exposure for the last year since my circle is mostly music & arts lovers of various sorts who enjoy sharing things they feel are under-appreciated.

They have leagues by invite and public leagues and it uses spotify to build out the playlists which means any list with less than 15 songs gets their suggestions shuffled in for unpaid users like me.

Anyways, i'm isthiswill on twitter, threads, instagram, and youtube. In a few gaming and comics & bleach (Tite Kubo) discords, that vary in levels of activity and quality of discourse.

The music game app is literally called Music League.

And music-wise the last song I was jamming to was...

My Coworker's Daughter has been recording and releasing music under the name Sweet Mary initially and more recently as Zel. The latter work is more in step with something like latter day Sucre and her EP Overzealous on bandcamp is a fave. This is her first release in several years and came out a couple of days ago https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=JGf7Cw0xBeQ&si=z9uznfi3-jeLln_Q

Other cool stuff I've seen in the past few years:

Medieval version of Pumped Up Kicks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRIfsFefatg&list=LL&index=262

Seven Lions, "What's Done is Done," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH6A_LFEVMg&list=LL&index=268

Paramore, "Let the Flames Begin" and "Part II": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hlpyQXppYg&list=LL&index=61 When she goes into the lyrics "Oh Father, my Jesus" at 4:20 or so . . . powerful

Waken, "Dwell," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9W_hdqDUx4

The 1980s hair metal band Warrant did some awesome live renditions of Bohemian Rhapsody! https://youtu.be/5vBd3k4KrdI?si=-YipxfCDb7sgT4s9&t=4736

One of my favorite 90s groups (Take 6) -- I just found some great live videos!

"Mary", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0y9UAc1xbw&list=LL&index=83, amazing vocals at 2:36!!

"If We Ever" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0XrnBYSd-Q&list=LL&index=84

"So Much 2 Say" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT92UtIjNi4&list=LL&index=85 Ridiculous vocals. Haven't ever heard anything this difficult. Mervyn Warren's high note at 1:42 is absurd.

"Get Away Jordan," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_ymNl3TSbQ&list=LL&index=88

Recently found a live recording of George Michael and "Mother's Pride," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcolbFin5N4 Love George Michael so much.

Have you heard Dimash? Kazakh singer with an unbelievable range. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AUARjexCTlQ

Other random stuff from all different genres to throw at you:

Hania Rani: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFRdoYfZYUY&list=LL&index=183

Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen, "Fade Into You" (not the Mazzy Star version). A bit of a Portishead flavor. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTlKcl2waDU&list=LL&index=218

For a whole immersive experience in a film with original music about Iceland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md2CtjOPrIU&list=LL&index=245 Lots of ethereal, poignant music performed live, with scenes from Iceland mixed in.

Did I ever link to the Tiktok Tenors when they started doing their stairwell recordings during Covid? Amazing vocals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1F98bzOD4g&list=LL&index=259

Kevin Max, always a favorite vocalist. Stumbled across some of his stuff from early 2000s that never got heard much at the time. "21st Century Darlings," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdF-jfB7Bdk&list=LL&index=317 Interesting meter there! (A comment says it's 11 / 8 ).

Animal Kingdom, "The Blood That Runs Under Your Skin" (unreleased, 255 views, but a great song! love the chorus--unexpected chords) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pedv6xRsi5U&list=PLNP-fWn3XUZBkIH9CASd p6FC_YFggtPQ6&index=5

Actually, to save time, let me just link to my public YouTube playlist that I once called "Indie Rock" (very loosely defined). Over 200 songs there. I think you can see the whole playlist from the first video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1LeJjI2qZ0&list=PLNP-fWn3XUZBkIH9CASd p6FC_YFggtPQ6

Gotta call out this guy for sounding a bit like Led Zeppelin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfT3VkfQnwg

Loved a new Tears for Fears song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUp-ujO979U (one of the guys should be playing Gandalf or Dumbledore)

Also usually enjoy Bob Moses (the band): "Back Down," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXdFNDZY4WY
"Heaven Only Knows" (acoustic), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBrfrP2EzE8
"Hanging On," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQdCWM-x__k
"Enough to Believe," https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqcbMlyPK48
