This thread officially hi-jacked in praise of Poops who
made us all aware of this pbs documentary called, "The
Way the Music Died", to be shown Thurs. 5/27 night.

-------------------------------------------------------
I came across something that seems interesting to me, and thus could be to you too. Tomorrow night PBS is running a show on the current state of the music industry, it's huge decline in recent years (from $40billion 2 years ago to $28billion last year - if I remember correctly), and it's potential future. It's being done by some regular show called Frontline, and the name of the special is "the day the music died". I believe it's supposed to be a documentary, but for I know it could be filled with one sided propoganda. I heard a producer of the show (or maybe the director) talking about it on the radio this morning and he was blasting big corporatations pretty hard for the rise of pop artists and the decline of the singer/songwriter.

I post this here because I've seen a good bit of "can Eisley make it in today's market" discussion recently. As I heard them talking about it on the radio this morning, I couldn't help but think about Eisley and wonder about the impending release of their first full length. Man, I hope they "make it big" for so many reasons.

Anyways, if you want more info on the show, go to

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/

Perhaps this should be posted on a different board? If so, feel free to move it.

i often ponder a world without "record labels". not to say that record labels are bad; but these days it's easy to imagine major label artists selling their own music directly via their website and being able to make way more money off of one cd or digital downloads than they do today. that would drive down the cost of music. then everyone wins.

there's so much more to a record label though. they provide clout for advertising, press, concert booking. hmm. i'll set my tivo for this one.

it's pronounced "chasdew"

Thanks for the info, i'm definately going to check it out. The site says they're going to show it online so even better.

man talk about a complicated issue. One thing is for sure the major labels need to figure out how to coexist with the Internet.

It looks like this is going to be very interesting. Thanks for the heads up! With all of the useless threads that are posted here as the forum continues to expand, it's nice to run into something informative like this from time to time. Cool

stealing music needs to be illeagel. ahhhhhh i hate it.

It looks like it's more about the decline of the quality of mainstream music in general, which has led to people downloading and burning music even more than they probably would otherwise. I personally decide whether or not to support an artist based on many different factors, but I believe the point of this is just that music is continually becoming more and more business-driven than before, thereby lowering the artform of music to nothing more than a money-maker. Argh, I hate it...
