Disclaimer: I'm not that coherent today and I hope the band didn't see me way as I haven't eaten since breakfast and it's 2:20am. So, this might be all disconnected and...yeah. Oh well, there's always proofreading. Right now I'm snacking on some 12 grain/raisin-honey-oatmeal bread. Mmm...higher blood sugar content....

I just came back from the Eisley show. Snow who? what Patrol? Smile J/K. No disrespect. Snow Patrol put on a really tight set. Though I dig their tunes, I was really there to see Eisley.

The show was supposed to be at Richards on Richards, a smaller club, but it was moved to the bigger, nicer, newly renovated/clean/maintained Commodore Ballroom. The singer of Snow Patrol even complimented the venue, saying that he could "eat off of the floor here". Golly... Where would people dance after he gnaws off the entire dancing surface?

After my band practice, I arrived at 8pm, shortly after the doors opened. I drove there myself, but I was expecting some friends of mine to show up and possibly some “Boardies". I checked in my coat and saw John, Mike and Misty, my frengers from another hometown church. They were already sitting at one of the tables, so I sat and talked to them for a bit.

It was getting closer to 9pm so I decided I'd secure my place up at the front with all the other eisleyoids who were already there. Also, I did this because I had let CanadianAlias know that I'd be the guy in the Texas trucker hat at stage left. I wore the hat as a tribute; as a little signal for y'all to not mess with me. Very Happy

Soon after, CanadianAlias showed up with MayLongWeRun and we met up and chatted a bit. My friends Mike, Jesse & Theo showed up thereafter. Jonathan Clark came out and put the set lists on the stage. I had assumed it was Jonathan Clark because I read somewhere that he was really tall. And he was.

Waiting... talking... excitement building....lights dim... there they are! In three dimensions! I think Chauntelle saw my hat because she looked to the area where I was standing and smiled so. Laughing wishful thinking. Stacy and Sherri were shorter than I thought, and Weston and Jon were taller. Applause & Cheering! ....Wait a tick... the house music faded and they're still walking on stage putting their instruments on... <cough> awkward silence? Not really, I think everyone was just attentive.

JOY! What an amazing band.

They opened with Mister Pine. I knew some of the lyrics to some of the songs, mostly the chorus' of Telescope Eyes and Marvelous Things. I was watching Jon and Weston as I play bass and usually watch the drummer and bassists to see how the lock-in and stuff. Sherri would close her eyes a lot when she sings. That's neat. At some point in between songs, Stacy and Sherri said they both had colds, shrugged at the same time while saying something along the lines of "what can you do about it?" or "what are ya gonna do?" It was comedic. I chuckled and out of nowhere reassured them "you're doing well!” and Sherri said "heh, thank you." I did direct it at them both. Indeed, both vocal(ist)s were very pretty. Smile

As far as the sound went, I could hear everything fine. But I was right up at the front of the stage and didn't know how it sounded in the rest of the house. It probably wasn't their bestest most greatestest show evar only because I detected a little bit fatigue through the first 2 or 3 songs; however they had a day off. I later found out they spent 2 hours at the border crossing. yikes.

Either way, I loved it. I really enjoyed myself. I had never seen them live before, nor had I bought the EP's. (I have listened to both now and I think "Sea King" is a wonderful song, FYI.)

After their set, I immediately went to the merch table to get all the trinkets and then the band showed up for a casual meet&greet. I first talked to Weston, then Stacy, Sherri, Jon and last but certainly not least, Chauntelle. They all signed my poster. Everyone was genuinely sweet, listening, attentive, and down-to-earth. I couldn't believe it. But I could. It was great. I really wanted to meet Boyd, because he's... i dont know... come on, he's THE MAN!

After talking to them, Snow patrol started their set and I chilled and watched them at various locations. It seemed like they had a small set. I felt the show was odd with just two bands playing. I usually see at least 3 in total over the night. During Snow Patrol's set, I saw Jonathan Clark near the merch table. I talked to him a bit about his band Comrade, the sound, the tour, etc. Good times, nice guy.

When Snow Patrol's set ended and I saw a fellow near the merch table with coffee and a goatee.... Boyd?

Wow, what a guy: self-less, kind, approachable, the list goes on. With all my silly talk I think I said something like "you should preserve your DNA" Why do I say dumb things?! No filters on I guess.

I stuck around for a few moments, got my coat and bid farewell to CanadianAlias and MayLongWeRun. A good night was had. I felt like a goof at some points, talking to fast or whatever. I felt comfortable around them all, no nervousness, just underfed and overslept. I do remember accidentally pronouncing the band "EEZZLEE" a couple of times. But I can explain Smile. You see, I never have seen the Star Wars movies other than when I was a youngin', and I don't remember them. Yes, I know. They are essential classics and should be viewed by all. It is still in my massive movie/music/books backlog list. So I did not know the spaceport or whatever was called Moss "EYEZZLEE". For the longest time I was telling my friends about "EEZLEE" and then when I watched an MTV clip I was corrected on the pronunciation. Apologies.

So.... yeah....what a show. I wish I had taken pictures. I don't have a digital camera or film for my ...analog..? camera. CanadianAlias did take a few and I'm sure Boyd videotaped it. Wink

Golly, Poster

Awesome review. It bolsters my confidence that my first Eisley show in San Diego is just going to kick some major arse. I wish I could see them tomorrow.

(Shakes his fist at the air) Oh, Time, why art thou my enemy?!

Janell,
are you signed up for their mailing list?
If not, you should go to Eisley.com, and scroll down to the middle of the page where it lets you sign up for their email announcements.

Sorry you missed them.

Janell, I feel so bad for you, really.
If you were there you would've been able to hang out with them with CanadianAlias and I. We got to ride in the Eisley van, unpack guitars, watch soundcheck (we were the only 2 non-venue and non-roadcrew allowed in the place!), hang at Starbucks and our spot during the show was directly (like my hands were on the stage) between Stacy and Sherri.
When the next show rolls around in Vancouver, we should definitely hang out.
