Do you classify bands by the scene they come out of or how they sound?

I usually classify bands by how they sound, not their scene. But that's just me.

There was a bit of time when I was classifying bands by the scene they are coming from. But lately, it's been sound.

a little of both, but mostly sound.

sometimes the 'scene' aspect of it makes me find out about a band.
from there its music.

but mostly, i hear a band, i like it, and i listen to it. i dont care what scene its in.

i could go to a harder screamo underoath show one night and then go see eisley or death cab the next night. so i dont caer too much about scene.

the Presidents of the United States of America came out of Seattle at the same time as grunge. scene rarely holds meaning to me unless the bands are trading shows or share members. Still it's about the sound to me.

I do a little of both. I hear about a band, and then look at other bands within that scene (eg Slowdive was part of the shoegazer movement headed by My Bloody Valentine).
