this is for the 20 somethings and younger me thinks...but here goes

before you saw spinal tap the movie, or were told that spinal tap was not a real band, did you think they were?

cos hannah and i were talking, and i've asked other people, and we all totally thought they were a real band, and we've figured out why...
the episode of the simpsons where spinal tap is on there and the blow up devil collapses totally tricked us all into thinking they were a band...damn the simpsons...

I actually heard of them and saw a picture... They looked too fake to be real... I just assumed that they were some sort of parody... and that's how I choose to remember it...

They kind of were real in that after the film was released the actors went on tour as the band. Similarly, there was a release of Spinal Tap music videos exclusively released for DVD. Spinal Tap were real in the same sense that Tony Clifton was real - on stage personas who transcended their role of personas.

I guess I did when I first heard about them a long time ago. Because all I saw was a Spinal Tap album in the store and just made the assumption. But, my friend told me about the movie and what it was about, so I knew it wasn't real when I saw the movie.

Sadly, yes. And the Simpsons episode really did contribute to my belief they were. Then I was talking to some friends or reading an article (grr... work memory, work) about it only to realize I was wrong for years. Sigh.

This isn't fair, because Spinal Tap became a genuine band (to a very real degree) after the mockumentary.
