This is a poll for those of you who have read Hamlet. I had to read it this past year as a freshman. It was awful and no one understood. At least one third of the class got cheater copies of the book so they could understand. What do you think is an appropriate age for teachers to let their students read Hamlet? How old were you when/if you have read it? Personally, I think freshman year of highschool is too early. Especially since we also read the Odessey (spelling, I don't know), Lord of the Flies, Cantebury Tales, Animal Farm, and Anthem this year. Probably another I forgot, too. _________________ my name's carrie and i love a good sandwich so if you have a sandwich, come roll with me!

I agree, it was a complete waste of however long it took us to finish. And our school is really lame, we have this participation grade, where each day you are given a 1-5 point grade on your participation in class... so the kids that didn't understand Hamlet got screwed over because they didn't know enough to particpate. The teacher had to explain EVERYTHING that we just read. I got one of the cheater/modern day translation books. _________________ my name's carrie and i love a good sandwich so if you have a sandwich, come roll with me!

We started to watch it, but then we all found out after we finished watching it we had to do an essay on some Latin guy and compare it to the movie or something. So we all NEVER mentioned finishing the movie to our Latin teacher until a few months later, so every now and again we'd watch a little more. We never did finish it. _________________ my name's carrie and i love a good sandwich so if you have a sandwich, come roll with me!

Our teacher spent most of the class period explaining to us what we just read than actually reading the book itself. Whew, it took a while to finish that one... but yeah, i'm going to be a junior, and I think it would be a much better idea to read that stuff now instead of trying to get freshman kids to understand it... which usually doesn't happen. And if it does, it is usually forgotten pretty easily. |

No. She should have started us off with something pretty easy (Animal Farm), then progressed to a little more difficult (Lord of the Flies), moved on to harder things (Cantebury Tales/Hamlet), THEN read the Odyssey and finish the year with an easy one (like Anthem). _________________ my name's carrie and i love a good sandwich so if you have a sandwich, come roll with me!

we followed along with the book while we watched the movie in my english AP class. my teacher says shakespeare should be watched and not read because it's so much more of an experience. i actually liked it, and i thought the majority of my class understood. it was a class of juniors and seniors. shakespeare is really interesting. it seems most people either love him or hate him. |
