Producer Named It's both a sad and wonderful day. I'll make this short and then chime in as the thread develops if there are questions. If the thread doesn't develop, that's ok too. We got the call today - The producer for eisley's first LP CD will be: (drum roll....) Rob Schnapf. What's he produced? Well, for starters - all of Elliot Smith's records. yes, Figure 8, Either/Or, XO... It's so weird; Rob received a phone call from Elliot just a few days before he sadly took his life (weeks ago at the time this is being posted) requesting Rob's involvement on his next project. Looks like Eisley is going to fill Rob's schedule instead of Elliot. Other records of Rob's: Beck (Mellow Gold, Beercan, Pay NO Mind, Odelay), The Anniversary, The Vines, Toadies, Rancid, Jimmy Eat World, Fu Manchu, Saves the Day...etc. On a different note, it's a sad day because our friend, Aaron Sprinkle was nearly set to do the project and it's been really hard to switch gears - both for Aaron and Eisley. Both really had their hearts set on it. In the end, it was the bands choice to go with Rob even though management and label were in strong concert together on this one;...but it wasn't an easy decision. We have the relationship with Aaron - and he did a marvelously, freaking, amazing job on the title cut to the new ep - which will only gain momentum as the new video comes out sporting Aaron's thumbprint. He's forever tied in with the band - and eisley wants to use him on future projects. We love him, think he's amazing and were awesomely blessed to even get to work with him. Thanks also to Brandon Ebel, who's great plan it was to get us up to Seattle a few months ago. Rob, of course, had the name and the "discographic clout" ( i just made that up). Stacy and Sherri surely swooned when we found ourselves eating breakfast with Rob in that popular diner on Sunset the morning after their House of Blues show. Why did they swoon? Because of Figure 8 and X/ and Either/Or; because of what he did with Elliot. Huge fans. (footnote: Aaron's top 3 list of producers includes Rob. His favorite singer songwriter and most influential in his own music career is Elliot; I don't think Aaron would mind me saying this - but he was deeply moved emotionally (to many tears) upon hearing of Elliot's death. Aaron is one of the dearest guys and one of the most talented on planet earth; we spin his discs non-stop in the mix with our favorites. Also, you should check out Aaron's discs - Moon Traveler, Kindest Days and Barefaced) So...even though the band was a little split on the idea of using Rob, they felt like Stacy and Sherri being the song writers should have a great deal of "say" on the matter. Certainly no one can argue that Rob has created timeless, classic records. Here's Rob's deal: At first, he didn't connect with the band's cd's (I should say recordings) - even after prompting and much excitement from WB, he basically told them that he loved the songs and vibe and all the great things happening with the band, of course...but told our A&R (Craig Aaronson) that he's have to hear the band live...and, that he did. Afer the LA show, Rob became seriously interested. He flew to Salt Lake to hear the band again and talk more. He told us emphatically, he wants the project. Loves it all and is super excited. I know there's always talk about labels wanting a big name. No doubt that it can't hurt. Rob certainly provides the name, but you guys should know that Eisley doesn't really care about all that crap. It's just about the recording; Sherri and Stacy swooned only because they love the style and sounds of the records Rob makes. The rest of the band agree's that Rob should be able to nail it. He basically told us that he works very hard...(kept stressing how hard it is) to find what it is about music that inately draws people in....that moves people; his goal is to find the heart and soul of the band through it's songs... to keep that honest, natural, live sound... His records are beautiful, very Beatles - very late 60's sounding to me... He's a great guitarist/writer and I've heard he's great working with band's and helping define their sound. Rob has a indie bend - but creates rock records that can be used in for all media; very accessible, natural... He uses analog tape and works very streamline - focusing on "the take" as a jewel....not caving into multiple, multiple takes followed by 10 minutes of editing comped vocal files, etc. He will probably strike the perfect balance between eisley's indie vibe while insuring it has commercial value. In our second meeting, he talked much about producers caving into digital default mode - whereby, they simply build this giant digitoid of stacked, layered, compressed music that is easlily afforded by the techonology available to every studio and every kid with a computer these days. It's digitally, sonically perfect - and therefore it seems to last about 6 months before people are bored with it and on to the next one. Eisley wants a timeless, trendless recording. Eisley wants the classic, calibur of a Neil Young or a Turtle's record...with the emotional warmth and sonic beauty of Dark Side of the Moon. We don't want perfection. We want a recording that has soul...that makes you cry....that transcends trends technology. Why settle for anything less than "classic"? Too many records are great but don't last. I love the new Rooney record, but to me...it's too perfect. It's so much closer than most records being released these days, but still I fear that in 3 months, I'll never spin it again. Eisley's current recordings are guilty of that. But what about "Hail to the Cheif"? Timeless...even if you're not totally sold on the songwriting - the producing gives it a timeless quality. Earthy. Vivid. Natural. Rock. What about the new Deathcab record? Totally indie....but totally beautiful, honest..but one I'll be spinning for years. What about "How it Feels to Be Something On"? (old Sunny Day) What about "Rubber Soul"? What about "Houses of the Holy"? What about "Parachutes?" Then consider contrasting those with many of the radio hits you hear these days that are "PoOf!" - here today, gone tomorrow. Screw radio. If it's a "radio recording" they need to get airplay, then let them play their radio music to their radio crowd until it all crumbles in on itself...because the rest of us aren't interested in creating art that meets the commercial criteria of the industry that forcefeeds "hits" to the mind-numb masses who are really not music lovers at all...but are just bored during drive time. note: I don't mean "screw all radio". I mean - only those that don't play good music. (translation: music we like) Well, that's all for now. In closing, I want to say thanks to Aaron for being willing to endure this roller coaster ride with Eisley, for loving us in spite of how it turned out, for considering us your friends, and for showing such genuine interest and unselfishness from the beginning - when you passed Eisley upward to music attorney's and record labels, and when you risked your time to record "MARVELOUS THINGS" without the guarantee you'd ever be compensated. You are the best and we love you. ok. That's it. More news on the full length as it unfolds. Schedules are being penned in now. Thanks. Eisley's choice of producer seems to be a perfect fit. It is true that an album is not all about songwriting, but it also involves the production and many other elements. Eisley's LP will be a timeless masterpiece, that trancends the times that we live, and extend way into the distand future. Great job Eisley on your selection of producer, I could not have found a better one if I had tried my self. Hail to timeless music, and the old record player filled with dust in the attic; gems that will not ever be forgotten. |

Wow... That's quite an amazing announcement. I hope the band all of the best as they begin working with Rob. I'm really impressed by the sound of Aaron too... He sounds like a great guy, and I'm sure he's glad to at least know that Eisley is in good hands. I can't wait to hear what comes out of this relationship. I'm sure it's going to be great--with the timeless, classic feeling that you're shooting for. |

hold on, wait a second.... hooray for ANALOG! i sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, hope this means we will be getting a vinyl version of the new album. *crossing fingers and holding breath* i absolutely love the way either/or sounds on my record player, this is such (potentially) great news! _________________ hello. |

I was really expecting Arron but I guess Rob will be awsome I really enjoy His work. Im really on the producers side here whoever gets eisley to produce is a lucky person. I really enjoy analog it takes all the confusion out of it and you can never get the warmth and clean sound out of a computer. Im gonna support the decision but I do like the Idea of using Arron on the next album. Later, Andrew |

Congrats Eisley. It must be humbling and exciting to know that your going to be under the watchful eye of someone who has produced so many indie classics (elliot s.) and helped to push a few major-label limits (beck). Sounds like the perfect fit for you guys. I do have a question though... Are you planning to re-record some of the tracks from your EPs or is your LP going to be completely new? If this can't be answered now, I understand. You might have other things on your mind.... like that whole "touring-the-entire-United-States" thing going on right now. Safe travels. Congratulations! That's huge. Bagging a producer like Rob on a debut album. Man, X/O is easily one of the best albums of the last decade, as is Odelay. Very cool. Oooh, and a vinyl version of the album would be oh so nice. _________________ My epitaph, should I ever need one, God forbid: 'The only proof he ever needed of the existence of God was music.' -Kurt Vonnegut "...dance when you forget to wear pants..." -Seanbaby |

Aaron Sprinkle is way cool. I have been a fan of Poor Old Lu since they released their first proper CD in 1993. If I were Aaron, I'd be thrilled to have my name stamped on an Eisley CD even if I weren't compensated - considering Eisley are a big industry buzz right now. It gets his name out there - even if it is just one song. "Marvelous Things" sounds great! _________________ https://soundcloud.com/kiteswithoutstrings/tracks |
