Just as a preface: Not trying to start any religious debates here; I know that Eisley appeals to a wide range of folks from different religions or no religion at all, and that's all cool.

Anyway, on the question of what it means to be a "Christian" musician, I recently stumbled across this discussion of T-Bone Burnett, and was reminded of the "Is Eisley a Christian Band?" question from the FAQ on this site, and thought that at least some other folks might find it interesting as well:

Quote:
Two quotes in particular have stuck in my mind ever since I read the book some years ago. Turner describes how Burnett drew inspiration from CS Lewis’ comment that “I believe in God like I believe in the sun. Not just because I can see Him, but because by Him I can see everything else.” As Burnett put it in a 1980 interview:

"If Jesus is the Light of the World, there are two kinds of songs you can write. You can write songs about the light, or you can write songs about what you can see from the light. That’s what I try to do." (p 165).

. . . Burnett explained this to Rolling Stone in 1982:

"A bricklayer’s job is to build a good wall that will stand against the rain and wind. Writing JESUS on it isn’t going to help it withstand the storms."

That reminds me of "King of the Hill" when Hank is talking to a Christian rock guy. He says something like "You aren't making Christianity better, you're just making rock worse."

I lent Combinations to a friend at work recently. She said she found a lot of Christian references in it? I guess if thats what you're looking for, you can interpret it that way.

yeah...i think you're right.
in my interiew with sherri, i asked her if some people were right in their interpretations like that but she dodged the question all together. (and it wasn't even the stereotypical "why not Christian music?" route.) Laughing

I think you can find more reference's to Christianity in a band like Brand New's work than in Eisley's.
It makes sense that people of faith will include their beliefs in their art, but I don't really notice it.

Totally agree. Although sometime I think stuff like that has something to do with the writer's background. Wasn't Jesse's dad a preacher or something?
