 Post subject: What is it about Room Noises (and the other older songs)?Posted: Mon Jul 20, 2009 4:06 pm 
So some of the other threads got me thinking...what is it about Room Noises? It's been torn to shred by some as childish, forced into molds by WB (Brightly Wound the changed non-album version anyone? Telescope Eyes), whatever what have you. But yet it seems to have some magical staying power. I know some others would disagree, but I liked Combinations. When it came out, I thought that it was a real show of maturation. The arrangements, the voices, the lyrics, etc. And yet 4 times out of 5 when I listen to my music on shuffle, I will skip over a Combinations song and yet not a Room Noises song. I wonder why that is? What is it about Room Noises that I don't grow sick of Marvelous Things, the very first Eisley song I heard? I know before I had any of the Eisley CDs, I was forced to merely watch any videos I could find, so that included the Room Noises songs and the earlier songs like Lady of the Woods or Over the Mountains. My family grew sick of them and me because I sang Mr. Pine on repeat, especially whenever it snowed. I know we as audience members have no say in what happens to how songs are written behind closed Eisley doors, but I am really secretly hoping for a return to the ethereal lyricism and soundscapes of Room Noises and earlier works on this new CD. I think that you are part of a Vocal Majority on this board, cept you at least gave Combinations a left-handed compliment as the more grounded, yet less interesting older sibling as far as records go... Well, some of it may be the memory/first-experience-with-Eisley thing. I know it's not like this with everyone, but the first songs that I heard and fell in love with was Marvelous Things, older songs, and Room Noises...so I still have a special feeling when listening to them. So sad, but just like other big instances in world history...in my personal history, I know exactly where I was when I heard my first Eisley song. 
Another part of it could be just the soundscape they created with that record. If you combine the lyrics, with the music and then the sonics...they truly made some unique songs. It was almost like they were bringing you into this cool, slightly happy, slightly eerie, slightly bittersweet world. And while they may be hard for huge masses of people to "get," those who do get it, REALLY get it and fall in love. That's not to say that isn't the same for some with Combinations, or that you can't love both albums! That's just my opinion on the original question.

I find it that when I listen to Room Noises, I have to listen to it all the way through and not on shuffle. It's magical that way.
Combinations is in my opinion almost as epic as Room Noises was for me, but I can skip tracks and go back to them without ruining the vibe. it's just something I noticed. "Lyrical mysticism," "soundscape." Those are very good discriptions of my own take on Room Noises! RN is how I came to know Eisely and the experience was magical! I personally prefer Combinations to Room Noises. Although it is kinda weird now that you mention it. Like, I do think that some of the RN songs will never get old, no matter how many times I listen to them. I think that's partly due to the lyrics; the songwriting in Combinations- while exponentially 'maturer' than that of RM- is pretty straight-forward. With RN, however, you always notice something new with each listen; particularly with the abstract lyrics of songs such as Plenty of Paper, Marvelous Things and Brightly Wound. However, Sherri and Stacy have grown up now, so I don't expect them to write like that anymore... |

A lot of it probably has to do with the nostalgia factor, too. I mean, I typically like listening to an artist's older music more than the newer stuff, just because that's what I've been listening to for so long, whether the new album is better or not. I agree with you, Combinations really showed that they have matured alot. I think their voices, their music, and their lyrics were more mature. But I will always love their older music. I love it because it's more indie and is more like a bunch of talented music lovers expressing themselves as they can...I can't explain it very well. I liked their fantasy-filled lyrics and talk of fireflies and whatnot and that setting or whatever that Stacy always played with her keyboard. It was less mature, but I'm gonna say it was less like something you would hear on the radio. Combinations was still awesome. I liked alot of the songs, but I will always LOVE their older stuff. I had no idea people don't like Combinations. I think it's a far superior album, no contest. Probably in my top 10 all time. Ten Cent Blues is one of the best songs ever. |

I think they're great. Yet I am inexplicably drawn towards Room Noises. I listen to it far more often. And people I newly introduce to Eisley are much more drawn to it as well. I have no complaints with Eisley's evolution, I get more excited with each new record knowing it will take me to another level as a fan. I listen to both records, sometimes both on shuffle, and sometimes even the pre-Room Noises demos, but none are more superior than others to me. |

Why change something that was already perfect? I know, that's a stupid question. Change is inevitable as people grow up, and Eisley's artistic expression had to follow suit. Even so, I can't help being attached to the old style and thinking that if Room Noises had come after Combinations, only that would have been a progressive evolution. Although Combinations is undoubtedly great, it's hard for me to listen to because it's a reminder that something I love is gone. I hope that something will be resurrected in the new album.

This is how I feel, and I am glad that Eisley doesn't put the same record out on the shelves over and over. If they didn't change I would get bored and move on. But I know that they always change it up and that this record is going be different from all the rest. |
