I cannot afford a Rickenbacker that makes that great ring in Eisley songs like Mr. Pine. I was wondering if anyone knew what kind other guitars (cheaper) can come close.

i know the rickenbacker plays an important part, but you gotta take into thought about the amps, pedals and the talent making the right tunes.

im a musical dummy so if someone can put this in musical dummy vocabulary--
what's the pedal used for? and is it only for guitar players etc? im totally lost.

The "pedal" is an effect pedal -- distortion, flange, echo, etc. Stomp on it to turn it on, stomp on it again to turn it off. (hence, "stompbox")

I think using a Strat (or something else with single-coil pickups) should get you pretty close to that sound. Closer than using a Gibson or Ibanez with double humbuckers, at least...
